Devon Toews isn’t going anywhere. At least for the next seven years thanks to a newly inked contract extension between him and the Colorado Avalanche. Toews’ new deal comes in at a discounted $7.25 AAV. For a player who would have been one of the hottest players on the UFA market next offseason, he would easily have commanded more money and would have gotten it. But playing with someone like Cale Makar, and playing for championships was as important, and maybe even more important, than the dollar amount. So we can all breathe a little easier knowing the best defensive duo in sports will be together for many years to come.
The Avalanche were also on the ice Saturday to face off against the San Jose Sharks. A game many, your hosts included, didn’t think was going to be too difficult to get two points. Mackenzie Blackwood had other plans, at least for 59 minutes.
It took a pulled goalie and a Cale Makar shot, the Avs 50th of the game, to finally crack Blackwood, and then a slick shoot-out shot from Mikko Rantanen to best the Sharks.

Proud to be an everdayer…great last minute win. Team has potential and bring on the kraken….after the sharks, we like seafood. Glad Tazer is staying, he and Driver 🎱 are awesome together. Good show tonight guys….appreciate ya. ✌️🎶💙❤️🏒
Maybe he just wanted to settle down and keep is kids in the same school. Plus he gets to play with the best defenseman (player?) in the world. Not a bad life. I'm thrilled to have him long term. He certainly has my respect.
Now imagine what his justification is….
and thats why players like mcdavid will never win a cup to greeedy and cant see the bigger picture like mack did ,take all the money for ur self and leave scraps for ur team not how u do it , and toews knos that he doesnt just want one cup . the fact ppl keep putting the oilers as cup favs year after year is hilarious they will never win a cup with mcdavid never!, nm with nurse and whens his contract done lmao 9 mil for that plug lmao im calling it now leafs will win before Edmonton does and Edmonton wont win till like 2130 lmao ill be long gone but i kno im right lol lmao i wrote this before kyle bought up Edmonton lmao hilarious lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣love it , nothing better than an avs win and an oilers loss in the same night watta week 2 in a row wooo
contracts are getting so crazy , they need to start being based on performance like golf , like ye will give u this much if u actually produce so much per year then bonus for performance, we made that mistake with wats his name bodker had a good half a season played great , then like gave him 3 mil more then he was worth and he shit the bed the next year
Makar probably had a lot to do with the decision. He seems to want to play next to Toews.
think kadri actually did like it here but yeah it is very rare for them to actually take it on especially after a cup win but Toes man that's respect!!!!
gaash couldnt stand toes in edmonton gaash
id play for a million no matter how good I am and only play for the avs
As a former goalie familiar with modern techniques, I think leg pads are way too tall. Each goalie could cut at least 4" off the top & not lose protection. Also reduce tye catching glove cuff called a "cheater". Lastly, could reduce width from 11" to 10" without losing protection. Although it should be noted they allowed 12" width for decades until 2005 I believe
Toews doesn't actually lose that much by taking this deal. They only make like 30% of what their actual contract is so (7*7.25)0.3=15.25 vs let's say $9 million. (7*9)0.3=18.9. That's $3.65 million in difference over 7 years.
Chris was glowing when talking about Toews ahaha I love to see it!
I was at the game 4 clincher in Nashville in 2022 and ended up winning Toewsers game tying goal puck on Meigrey when it became available. It wasn’t my primary targeted puck from that game, but after Toews showed his true colors during this…..I couldn’t be happier to have ended up with it in my collection. You don’t see this type of selflessness in pro sports any more and I’m a big Toewser fan now for sure!
My Band-Maid sound check #2…Without Holding Back for obvious reasons.
That was a character win on Saturday night. Absolutely dominated the Sharks but didn’t get frustrated and just kept pressing until they got the late equalizer from Cale. Was watching with a buddy and we were just laughing that the Avs weren’t up by at least 4 goals. Only two games in but this team seems like it has the potential to be really special.
Literally EVERYONE, even our Fanbase😉😉😉 was saying Toews was gone. C-Mac is doing the GM Job. Not Joe pulling the strings, C did this one. That's not saying Joe doesn't have a BIG say, but C-Mac is solidifying his GM role. Watching a few guys leave, like Kadri, players are seeing that taking a little less and staying with a Cup Contender and great Team atmosphere, is a huge point👍💪🏻 This Team is built different. They are playing for each other and we have been building that for the duration of this Core.
It is so good to see a man for whom money is NOT everything!!! I applaud him and the Avalanche for creating such an environment that Devon wants to stay. Thank you!
Everyone completely disagreed with me on another video but 7 mill for a top 5 defender in the league is insane
Toews was huge! Thanks Devon for taking the discount!!! We have the best defensive core in the league next 7 years!
I love this but also know it means somebody is on their way out. I'm not sure how on Earth they're going to resign Mikko/Makar/Byram, assuming Gabe comes back. They already sit at 84M for next year and will still need to fill almost 8 roster spots. Sure hope the cap goes up by a truckload.
At the end of the season when fighting for position these are the types of games that seperate teams…not to mention that it feels like the type of game that got away from them last year
I'm very happy I was wrong about this. I'm glad he is still here. My only concern is the back end of that deal doesn't become the anchor that EJ's deal became and cost us the ability to sign others who are more productive at the time when his production doesn't live up to his contract.
Toews wants legacy not just a one and done like kadri. This move not only keeps the top guys together but galvanizes the team when one of the big guys is willing to take a home town discount to make sure we win and have flexibility
I was so happy to hear the Toews extension got done. I disagreed about the lack of discounts on this team, many of the important players have taken a bit of a discount. C-Mac said this was a priority a year ago but I got a bit nervous when the season started and they hadn't got it done. It made my day/week to read this news and see how happy Devon is to have it signed as well. He's been my favourite player for years now, and this is why.
The hockey gods heard Chris and said they would prove him wrong. But for real massive respect for Toews, i think we should start a gofundme 😂
I was so looking forward to this podcast so I could see how giddy Chris would be to be proven wrong. Sadly, I am already seeing snarky comments online about the term and that we'll be sorry in a few years when he's lost a step or two. I feel like a guy who is this invaluable a contributor during our open-window Cup years maybe deserves to be "overpaid" a little when he's slipped past his prime. Money well spent, and like y'all pointed out – the cascade effect it may have on inspiring other guys who want to win more than they want to make that extra bank, isn't to be dismissed either.
That SJ game was un.real. I, too, was laughing as it became clear that no matter what we threw at him, he was going to either see it or have a divine intervention from the post or his defensemen. I wasn't even going to be mad if we lost, because it wasn't like the effort wasn't there – the guy was just on another planet that night. I feel bad for Blackwood for having a game like that and still ending up on the losing end, but oh well, such a shame, lol! The Avs keeping their composure and just sticking with the plan was really impressive to see.
Mikko has really come into his own these last couple of years. What a shootout goal. Everyone else trying to get a little fancy, get him to slide, and Mikko just skates in and snaps his shot like it's no big deal. Fantastic. Georgie had a huge game too. Overshadowed by the heroics of Blackwood, but he came up HUGE on a number of key shots and then in the shootout, he looked like he was reading their minds and had no trouble at all. His little victory stick-pump was great to see. 100 wins and what a way to get it.
You guys, I am just in love with our team this year. I know it's early. But, dare I say it… it feels like the '22 team again.
The reason hockey players take less money for a chance at championships is because as boys they dream of their name on the cup rather than being rich!
