This Shootout Move is Driving NHL Fans Nuts

Evgeny Kuznetsov of the Washington Capitals pulled off his classic shootout move yesterday in the shootout against the Calgary Flames. We break down why this cheat code of a move is so effective, and why some NHL Hockey fans can’t stand it.

  1. They should have 3 points for a win in regulation time. If regulation time ends in a tie then 5 minutes of overtime 5 on 5 , if a team scores in overtime they get 2 points and the loser gets 1 point. If it ends in a tie after overtime each team gets 1 point. I think regulation time would be way more exciting to watch cause all teams would want 3 points. No shootouts. Shootouts are for fun time in the all star weekend. Real skills are for game time. Bring it on. Hockey is a team sport not one on one. Win as a team and lose as team.

  2. I'm not a fan of the shootout only because of the fact that both goalies could be shining bright like stars the entire game and then it comes down to 3 goals…but it does on both sides show resilience and passion after 65mins of endurance.
The only goal I think should be deemed illegal is the spinorama. If the rule is once you stop forward momentum..then clearly when you stop on a dime
.spin infront of the goalie…get in his crease and score on the backhand like most are..then that's end of forward momentum and whistle should be blown and no goal if scored declared…i mean when snow if sprayed how can you say that the skater didn't stop his direct line?
Pls…any goalie explain this too me..I need YOUR opinion…not the thoughts of a forward.

  3. The problem I have with this is that type of play could never be executed in a real game because you don't have minutes to go down and score a goal. I think the solution to the SO is to have an opposing player allowed to start rushing from behind once you cross a certain point on the ice. I respect the display of skill but allowing this destroys the integrity of the game. In the meantime goaltenders are not allowed to leave their crease until the player crosses the blue line. The rules of the SO needs to change.

  4. I think a game should be worth 3 point total. If it goes to OT then the winning team should get 2 points and the losing team 1 point.

  5. Honestly it takes a huge amount of skill to do this, otherwise everybody would do it. But i agree that shootouts are lame af and they should just do 3v3 till a winner.

  6. Your can't make people happy, there are always going to be people that whine about something. Now they are complaining that guys are scoring on the shootout.

  7. He takes the shot about a foot outside the crease every time. An NHL caliber goalie should be able to put an end to this with a well timed poke check.

  8. I once pulled a Forsberg in free skate, but I'm not that good of a skater, so I had to go really slow and do kinda what Kuznetsov does in this video. Forsberg is my all time favorite player, so I combined that shootout goal of mine with MacKinnon's quick puck handling and Forsberg's finisher. So satisfying.

  9. It is not "high skilled". I will give the man credit for his accuracy and he does have power behind the shot. However if you get close enough and shoot hard enough the goaltender simply isn't going to have enough time to react. The goalie has no momentum and therefore can't move into the release. The shooter's lack of momentum means he's not forced to commit, but he doesn't need to because he can generate more than enough power with his wrist shot.

So here's the thing: This is actually the optimal way to do a shootout. It is also boring as heck. Dumb rule enables dumb action. I hope players practice this and use this approach all the time. I want to see the people who love it because its novelty see it so much it makes their eyes bleed.

People used to do shootouts and penalty shots like breakaways and they imposed a constraint upon themselves. Things gotten progressively slower over the years as players have realized they don't have a constraint. There's a reason why soccer does shootouts with the ball placed at the range it is.

I'll never get the crowd that likes "clever" interpretation of rules. Rather than realizing the rule is bad and needs to be updated, they take joy in dull pedantics.

Want to make shootouts interesting? Treat it like a breakaway and have a defender start 15 ft. behind so its at least remotely game like, instead of dull crap for the crowd that likes "clever".

  10. the slow lead in that kuz does is especially hard for goalies because we don't ever practice taking shots like that. most drills in practice are quick and the only chance youd have to actually practice that type of lead in would be on your own time for a one in a million chance you are in a shootout against kuz
