Since we’re on this train, let’s take a moment to discuss the Vancouver Canucks money problems, caused by years of negligence and poor decision making with contracts like Tyler Myers, Brandon Sutter, Antoine Roussel, Jay Beagle, to an extent Braden Holtby, and others, which, in turn, costed the Canucks cheaper calibre talent like Tyler Toffoli and Troy Stecher.

Yeah, I don’t want to pull any punches this time.

  1. I don’t mind losing stecher but losing Toffoli was big and would’ve completed top 6

  2. I’m glad with Toffoli sticking up to himself, as a Canucks fan: good job Montreal for giving what he asked for.
Fire the Canucks FA signings management. Scouting is fine.

  3. Why the f did we give Myers 6 million? Loui, I understand the contract. But for Myers?

  4. Who wouldn’t want Toffoli right now! Hindsight is 20/20 but foresight should be at least better than 20/200 for an NHL GM.

  5. Canucks D is brutal and no depth up front! I would agree with lose for Hughes this year….as a habs fan just sayin

  6. Awful money management is right. It's not just overpaying them its too long of a term. Is Myers worth 6 mill when he's in his mid 30s? Nope. Not even worth it now.

  7. Move Benning to what he's good at scouting and get a new GM for salary management and good trades

  8. The Canucks could've let Virtanen go, and not sign Hamonic and Hawryluk in order to re-sign Toffoli…

    Virtanen: $2.55mill
    Hamonic: $1.25mill
    Hawryluk: $0.8mill

    That's $4.6mill which would've been enough to re-sign Toffoli…

  9. I can hear the frustration in your voice. I too am frustrated with our poor management

  10. Swedish No.1 NHL podcast "NHL-timmen" discussed Vancouver prior to this season and they concluded the Canucks probably not gonna redo what they did in the bubble playoffs this season, mostly due to just too many bad contracts like Beagle, Sutter, Roussel and Eriksson.

  11. welp i just realised that jim was signed to a 3 year extension as nucks gm……………… back before the season started
    well crap………………

  12. have to be honest to you man. i feel your pain, i am a Habs fan. The truth is players dont want to come to Canada in general and you have to overpay them to get around the steep tax situation compared to most American cities, and offer incentives to keep them long term. Best bet is to swallow the pain and go for broke to score a real good pick in the upcoming draft. Thats the path the habs took and look at the difference now. The question i have for you {because you seem really educated on the draftees}, are there any amazing players arriving in the draft following this year. if there are more than a few, plan ahead and do some trading for some picks. You also clear up some space in the process and can restock after the season. But you have to fix the management first………….

  13. Next season they going to have to move a good piece off the roster. To make room for Elias and Quinn. Your looking at 15 M for both of them at the lowest If they take a bridge deal.

  14. Hey Legoman, I think it would be great if you would analyze each trade or free agent signing Benning has made since he arrived. I think that would show the average fan, like me, how many blunders and poor signings this guy made. I wouldn't bother with drafting, as he's done pretty well, with the exception of 2014, and 2016 first rounders.

  15. good video… your best… important analysis it seems… have so many bad contracts…. & was so obvious that Holtby was highly paid at 8.6m given .896 save %…. Toffoli proved he was good… & would really help the team when their scoring goes cold – which is fairly often… your Virt vs Toffoli comparison etc… Boesser was overPd… but has come on now so fortunate. Stetcher was a good teammate and solid at that pay level… so some odd contracts… & your input highlights some questions.. Go Canucks

  16. Bro what you guys gave up to get Toffoli absolutely was worth it if you could’ve resigned him. Don’t separate the two. Not resigning him was the issue, trading for him in the first place was not the issue. That was a good trade. It’s the deals to Myers, Beagle, Eriksson that are the issue. Letting Taney and Markstrok get away etc. get rid of Myers, Eriksson and Beagle and you have money for everyone else plus enough money to sign a guy like Edmundson at 3.5 mill who you guys would be better off having than Myers… Benning has to go.

  17. People gotta realize that the GM doesn't scout players…The team has a entire Scouting Staff
..all the GM really has to do is listen and make the final decision

Bennings best skill is trading but it doesn't make up for his absolutely horrible contracts and camp managements …Contracts like Eriksson are excusable because he was supposed to be a 1st liner buttttt signing guys that have been and always will be 4th maybe 3rd liners for 4 million is absolutely inexcusable…Benning has NO future awareness..I have been saying this for YEARS but everyone told me it will be fine, Well now everyone is seeing why it's a MAJOR issue

  18. Benning should have sent Ericsson to the Sens or Wings with a pick/sweetener to rid themselves of that contract, then they could have resigned Toffoli and Stecher. Bringing in a cheaper backup or 1B option for Demko would have also freed up some cash. The Nucks are gonna be hard pressed to make the playoffs this year.

  19. JB just doesn’t know how to invest the right money on the right players, he doesnt know how to shop around to get players.

  20. I don't care about sketcher markstrom and Levio. I blame markstrom he should have told us he was leaving. We were waiting to sign him first.

  21. Benning needs to go this team won’t take the next step for a while. I ain’t even saying this now I’ve been saying this for years

  22. So annoying what happened to this team. It legitimately looks like the heart this team had in the bubble is gone. Hopefully podkolzin and maybe if we get lucky Luke Hughes make things better

  23. IN SUMMARY: BENNING KNOWS HOW TO OVERPAY FOR A MISTAKE. HE CANNOT FIX THEM BECAUSE HE SIMPLY CANNOT SELL IT.

HE GETS CREDIT FOR DRAFTING. THATS IT.

TRADES, NEGOTIATIONS, FREE AGENT SIGNINGS, HANDLING CAP SPACE,

Sbisa ( Overpaid but got lucky because Vegas took him)
Roussel (Overpaid in term & money)
Baertschi (Overpaid in term & money)
Beagle (Overpaid in term & money)
Sutter (Overpaid in term & money)
Eriksson (Overpaid in term & money)
    Gagner (Overpaid & bust)
    Ferlund (??)
    Schaller (Somewhat fixed)
    Gudbranson (He somehow fixed IT)
    Spooner (Still paying)

  24. As a red wings fan I feel for you, we really hated Holland due to his mediocre contracts. Was a breathe of fresh air when we hired Stevie Y.
