In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talk about how the roster is set and we know who will be playing in game one of the regular season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In what is the most surprising move is that at practice today the Capitals chose to go with Anthony Mantha over Matthew Phillips. Phillips has done nothing but kill it all pre-season long and Anthony Mantha wasn’t able to find the back of the net. Later Dan talks about what the “experts” in the NHL think that Caps will do this season. Dan later talks about the surprising move the Hardy Haman Aktell will be starting his season in Hershey.

Hot take, I truly believe we are contenders for the cup this year. Coach Carbs and the caps look rejuvenated, they are fresh, and many negative statistics could be looked over confidently. We don’t seem like a regular season dominator, but I truly see a playoff roundhouse in this team. Much like the panthers of this past season (8th seed, will be swept by the B’s, etc) and what happened there? They made it to the finals. We have young talent, veteran presence and our depth looks amazing. Kuzy has been my favorite player since watching him 3 years before being drafted by the Caps, and I believe he could contend for 100 points this season. Backy and Ov look great, Matthew Phillips has looked amazing and I’ve loved his compete since learning we picked him up, Sandin is also a hidden gem many statisticians look down upon. The East’s top contenders according to these same statisticians are saying Carolina, NJ, and the Leafs will win the cup. Looking at last year Carolina had scoring issues throughout their playoffs, we have better scoring depth, NJ was young and inexperienced in playoff hockey, Ov Backy Osh Wilson Carl Kuzy Kuemps are cup champs along with heavy physical presence, and leafs trample under pressure, Philips McM Kuzy Osh are fast and apply ample pressure. I ranted on quite a bit but I believe this team has what it needs to prove the entire league wrong this year. Love the vids keep up the good work!
I agree Mantha should be in. Pre-season is nothing. Reacess after 6-10 games. If Mantha has a poor start give Phillips a chance. Had Mantha not had chances the story would be different. I think and hope Mantha will play and I believe he scores opening night.
Mantha has had a bumpy, unproductive preseason, coming off of a bumpy, unproductive season last year. What he makes doesn’t matter..
I agree with your take on Phillips, and am completely dumbfounded. Maybe there is something here we’re missing, but it seems wrong to leave him out of the opening night roster. Reward excellence! Talk about snuffing out a guy’s spirit…and what kind of message does this give?

Dan, I think these are all part of the psych tactics by Carbery aimed at Mantha first and foremost. Remember how Barry Trotz kept Kuzie in line 3 and 4 with his gynormous contract? And then Kuzie delivered in 16-17 and, most importantly, 17-18 for us. I think he sees potential in Mantha, which I do to, he just needs some personal attention, which hopefully he gets now from the head coach and the staff. Phillips will get his chance no matter what.
It’s all money value/ we need mantha to produce some def numbers if we have any chance of trading him. Cmon common sense my guy
So I came to two conclusions about this and I would love your thoughts. 1 – Do you think it could be one last show case for a last try for a trade. 2 – Mantha is playing on the 4th line while Protas (who we thought was on the fourth line) is on the third. Maybe Mantha is getting the nod because of position. I’ll be honest I want nothing to do with Phillips on the 4th line. I would absolutely take Phillips on the third line.
Eventually I think Protas drops down to the 4th line where we thought I’d be. Beck Down Protas is a stellar 4th line.
Milano Strome Phillips is a great 3rd line.
I do like your point of who we are playing as well. I don’t want my fourth line who will be up against some tough players on the Pens.
I’m pissed with caps if mantha is over Phillips, makes opening night same old shit feel, he is a lazy player, just like kuzy, but kuzy is talented enough to turn on the switch. Vrana is still a better player in that trade but caps needed space to sign ovi. Hope vrana is mentally okay now and lights it up for 40 plus for St. Louis.
I’ll take 100% a 100% of the time with Phillips over a athletic 50% effort 100% of the time mantha ,Anaheim will take his salary with a # 1 pick or better yet keep as a depth guy until contract is over .so we can sign paciretti when he scores 25 In limited games.
