With the amount of people were hiring, pretty soon everyone will have an individual coach to work with! /s

In reality though, if they can find a place for him to work and he brings value to the table, why not? Whether it’s behind the scenes or up front.

Interesting, Canucks were linked to a KHL coach at some point in the last year as well, no? Can’t remember who it was though

Very smart move especially with having Russian playerd

The Canucks have three fairly high profile Russian players on the team (including Podkolzin). I’d assume this is a move to cater to the Russians a bit more in an attempt to maximize the potential of their three assets and make them feel more at ease within the organization. 🇷🇺🇨🇦

Canucks becoming the #1 destination for a Russian players wasn’t on my bingo card for 2023.

Is there enough room behind the bench?

We seem really committed to being a Russian based team rather than our deep history of Swede’s. Interesting choice given the political climate.

Seems like a good fit. Just from a little research, he bases his coaching style from newer age Russian methods (treating them well, knowing how to talk honestly to different players, understanding how psychology plays a part in a player’s understanding/learning) over older methods (sit down, shut up, do your job). He’s incorporated a lot of western style coaching habits/tactics because he’s worked under a lot of western coaches and coached a lot of western players. He seems to understand that young players/rookies play a bigger role on a team than people realize, and that their development matters whereas the older Russian style is that Owners want to win and don’t always see the importance in developing young players because they want results, and want results right away.

All this and he has two Gagarin Cups (one as an assistant and one as a head coach) three World Championship bronze medals, and an Olympic Gold as assistant coach of the Russian National Team in 2018.

Sounds like an ‘everyone wins’ way to get a man out of Russia during wartime.

Rutherford/Alvin know how to run an organization. Eventually their moves will pay off.
