This Day in Kings’ History (1999): Opening Night at STAPLES Center



On October 20, 1999, the Los Angeles Kings played in their first home game at STAPLES Center. Rob Blake scored the first Kings’ goal in their new home, and Jozef Stumpel scored the tying goal with 69 seconds remaining in regulation for a 2-2 tie against the Boston Bruins.

    My grandpa bought me tickets to this game. I was 14 and so incredibly excited for it. Even all these years later I still can see that Stumple goal in my head. I bought a keychain that night, my first keychain, that I still have on my keys to this day.
