Travis Dermott Defies NHL Pride Tape Ban

[Pretty much title, but my link-reference is bugged.](https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/coyotes-dermott-becomes-first-player-to-use-pride-tape-after-ban-from-nhl/)

Kudos to Dermott. Not only for standing up for Pride (I don’t consider myself that big a Pride guy – I have no problems working well with them and supporting them, but I’m shooting first if I win the shootout coin toss), but also for defying the NHL top brass.

More of that needs to be done to see where the NHL actually stands. That’s how we evolve and get ahead.

Defying the owners and saying “we aren’t playing when we’re sick with Covid.” (Miller vs Aquaman)

Actually disciplining players and letting Bettman or the PA try to make themselves the bad guys defending bad apples (SJ terminating Kane’s contract and settled the difference, meaning a hugely better result than VAN’s buyout of Virtanen).

I’ll be honest – I like chaos, I like calling out BS, and I like actual result-seeking action rather than the passive drivel keyboard warriors spew out like “vote with your wallet”, so seeing a player stick it to the NHL on their Pride stance to see exactly where it stands is a great move. (PS: prove me wrong warriors: if you want to VWYW, then make Dermott’s jersey sales go up, just like Ivan Provorov’s in January 2023 when he sat out Pride night).

Hope he has a post-Canucks rebound and stays healthy.

Love Burkie offering to pay any fines too

    Canucks Legend Travis Dermott?

Good for him. I’m hoping the NHL just quietly ignores it and leaves it at that. They were wrong for banning it and should have left it to the players. Its their sticks not team logos etc.

But I also doubt they backtrack as Bettman seems stubborn as fuck. Just ignore it and leave it there, rather than doubling down on the bad press.

Yeah this is not a good look for the nhl. Good for Dermott. Now I want to see some players fuck with the league by mixing up the colours so it’s not technically a rainbow, or leave out one colour etc. make them realize what a stupid and unenforceable rule they’ve rolled out

He should be fined right away lol

Why would Sportsnet use an image of Dermott that doesn’t show the Pride tape?

Hockey shouldn’t be political, it’s a sport. I’m glad the league is stepping back. We got the message (many times over), we get the point (treat people respectfully), now let me just enjoy the sport.

Downvote me or whatever, but I just want to watch movies, play video games, and watch sports without race/sex political messaging constantly taking center stage. This isn’t Dermott’s arena to spread his political messages or to do whatever he wants. He broke the company rules on purpose, and I hope he gets reprimanded for it (not that it would be much). Do it on your own time.

The tape ban is the most ass-backwards policy ever… I expected better from a league with such a heavy Canadian portion.

Imagine gatekeeping the colour of a piece of tape. NHL, take your L.

Good for Dermott. This gesture means more then mandating that everyone must wear it.

People that got outraged that 3-4 players didn’t wear the jersey are the ones that ruined the whole event with bad publicity.

  11. Watch him get fined more than if he had whacked a guy in the head with his stick. The ban on wearing specialty jerseys during warm up was an over reaction by the league because of a handful of players didn’t want to wear them. The ban on the pride tape was just down right stupid. It will be interesting if other players follow. Somehow, I don’t think other players would have said no to the pride jerseys if Provorov hadn’t been the first to do so.

Hey guys, please correct me if I’m wrong and I’m not so well read up on this, but is pride tape banned every night of the year? For some reason, I interpreted what I read from the league that the Pride tape’s ban is on Pride night. I think the idea is they don’t want the players to be able to show they support a cause on the night that the team is having a night for a theme. Like no orange tape for T&R night or whatever but orange tape is fine on some other night. So that players who don’t wear the tape are singled out, as that’s kind of the basis for banning on-ice jerseys (as stupid as the whole thing is).

It really sucks he dealt with some untimely injury issues.

I was bullish on him at the time of the trade, but felt like he didn’t get a fair roll of the dice. Hope he can up his stock in Arizona, because he seems like a solid dude.
