Grand Rapids defeats Andover in Section7AA Quarter final hockey game- 4 to 2-Feb 21st 2017
The Grand Rapids boys hockey team opened the Section 7AA tournament with a 4-2 win over Andover Tuesday at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids.
After carrying a 2-1 lead into the third period, the Thunderhawks scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the third to go in front, 4-1.
Grand Rapids, the No. 4 seed in the section, will play No. 1 Elk River/Zimmerman at noon at Amsoil Arena in Duluth Saturday.
It was a quick start for the Thunderhawks after Michael Heitkamp scored 28 seconds into the game.
Andover answered with a tying goal from Charlie Schoen at 7:07 in the first.
It remained a tie game until 12:37 in the second period when Micah Miller cleaned up a deflected shot from Jack Burnson to put the Thunderhawks in front, 2-1.
Burnson extended the lead to 3-1 at 1:58 in the third period, then Nano DeGuiseppi scored three minutes later for the 4-1 lead.
Grand Rapids outshot the Huskies 51-14. Gabe Holum had 12 saves for the Thunderhawks and Andover’s Ben Fritsinger had 47.
