Brett Howden illegal check to the head of Brandon Tanev – Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

Brett Howden received a two game suspension for this illegal check to the head on Brandon Tanev. It was called a match penalty on the ice. I’d also issue a two game suspension, but two games on my scale is different than the NHL’s.

  1. Still match penalty. You are responsible for the hit. If the other guy doesn't see you, it's still your fault if you hit him. Yes he picked his head, that's why it's match penalty. And I don't understand, you say why is it match penalty and then you suspend for 2 games? No logic from you. Even if there is no suspension after the game. Still it's match penalty.

  2. I agree with your take. If Howden could have contacted the shoulder, there would have been no penalty. He was going after the puck, as he should be. There was no intentional upward movement or leaping into the hit.

Other than that, in two nights of hockey, the most dangerous hit I've seen in two nights of the NHL was the one by Beecher on Guttman and there is nothing anywhere about it. Intentional hit from behind that got him a boarding penalty and could have easily broken the guy's neck.
