On the evening of January 3rd, 1981, a young Wayne Gretzky, head down and going East to West, got rocked at the blue line of the Toronto Maple Leafs by defenceman Bill McCreary, cousin of referee Bill McCreary (same name, different person). It was the hardest hit of The Great One’s career but it might’ve been deserved. Earlier in the game, he’d attempted to slewfoot Maple Leafs forward Laurie Boschman in open ice and it started a massive fracas… McCreary, in only his second game, might’ve been simply exacting a little revenge…

Damn didn't hit Gretzky hard enough. Give that leaf a spot in the hall of fame for that beautiful yet not hard enough hit.
Fact: Leafs put McCreary on the bench for the rest of the game after this, next game, he was sent to the minors and never played in the NHL again!

Way too much protection for 99. I always believed Mario was the best because he took abuse and had size and reach. 99 had the NHL protect him it was pretty laughable at the time. He is the only player to score an overtime winner in playoffs against leafs after having been ejected for cutting Doug Gilmore while leafs were killing a Penalty in 1993. Only 99 could score technically not within the rules of the game an overtime winner.
It's a league in which morons with no talent to play make a career and those with talent get torn down. And the public applauds…
Think about all the times Cherry tells his audience if you touched Gretz you had to really answer the fight bell. Yet on this play NO ONE even lifts a finger. They don't even complain to the ref. Unbelievable. In todays game that Leaf player would have been shot/suspended for life..or both.
Keep that head up kids. And some passes arent worth taking.
