@Ottawa Senators

This is actually embarrassing for the NHL

In the Ottawa Senators home opener, fans chanted for Shane Pinto. The fact he wasn’t at camp and playing has been a bit of a saga as the team had literally no cap space to sign him and yet he was reportedly asking for 2 to 2.5 million. Confusing.. so what gives? Well, it all makes a lot more sense now.

The NHL announced that they have suspended the Senators 2nd round pick of the 2019 draft Shane Pinto for 41 games for violating the NHL’s gambling rules. This is a first for the NHL and well talk about that and more in todays hockey video!

  1. Pierre LeBrun – Pinto's suspension is retro-active to the Senators' first game of the season. I don't believe he would sign with the team now until he has served his suspension in January. The Dec. 1 RFA signing deadline doesn't apply to him because he's not Group 2 (can't sign an offer sheet).

  2. The NHL shoves gambling down our throats with every last sponsorship buck they can raise. They take no care or responsibility for the harm it can do to their fans and their families. Now they are laying in with harsh punishments for any player participation. Such hypocrisy!

  3. This is ridiculous. His infraction seems to be far less severe than Evander Kane's… Yet his penalty is far steeper. With how little information they're willing to make public, it's starting to look like they're intentionally trying to ruin his career so they can use him as a cautionary tale.

    Even as a Redwings fan, I think this is jacked up.

  4. The betting ads in the NHL are getting out of hand. They are almost the only ads I see now when I watch hockey. It's really annoying

  5. The betting crap on sports tv is disgusting. If you gamble, good for you, go ahead. But hearing the fucking announcers talk about odds and point spreads just really takes something away from the game. What a devil’s bargain.

  6. making lots of money already, looking for a 2-3 mill. paycheck, knows the rules…..breaks 'em anyway. i dunno, kinda hypocritical of nhl but at the same time, rules are rules.

  7. Sports betting has become a Pox on our society and no one is immune from it. Except me because I have a brain.

  8. I’m sick and fucking tired of all the sports betting going on and being advertised. When sports media constantly talks about “the line” or the over under on games like they are meaningful stats, it’s a problem. When football coaches are getting blasted for kicking “meaningless field goals” at the end of games because it ruins someone’s bets, there’s a problem.

    Get a grip for shit’s sake.

  9. This is misleading. There isn't, and probably will never be, enough information available to know exactly what Pinto did to get suspended. Players are allowed to gamble. One just has to look Evander Kane's history to realize this. It is when that player's actions can effect the integrity of the game will the league step in and punish the player, and rightfully so.

    The adverts on the helmets, and on the boards, and during commercial breaks and during broadcasts aren't directed towards the players, they are directed towards the viewing public. The NHL, broadcasters and Teams are first and foremost a business. Blame being in a capitalist society, but increasing the revenue of the product is the leagues ultimate goal. Gambling products and the advertising revenue they generate for the league helps fulfill this.

  10. The NHL have leaned hard into sports betting, the Senators even have gambling ads on their helmets, and then they suspend him?
