Holy shit that’s awful. There have been near misses with skate accidents before so this was bound to happen eventually… so sad.
I live near Nottingham where it happened, had a couple of friends at the game.
Sounded horrific… just an awful horrible accident, it’s easy to forget how dangerous and fast the sport is.

Matt Petgrave, whose skate unfortunately got clipped and made contact with Johnson, also played for Utica from 2018-2020 when they were Vancouver’s affiliate.
Worst thing I’ve ever seen on ice, by far. Just awful.

Stayed up thinking about this all night. Feel so horrible for his family, the thousands in attendance, and the other player who’s skate cut him. I hope neckguards become a more prevelent thing like we saw with helmets back in the day and recently face visors. The game is so fast and these accidents are bound to happen unfortunately. Just terrible, tragic news. I feel for his family, teammates and everyone inside the arena who had to see this happen. 29 years old is way too early to go.

I was due to take the family to that game, but had some stuff come up so we passed on our tickets.
Absolutely shocking what happened.
Just unbelievably tragic situation.
I really hope that after this, every league makes neck guards mandatory. As much as this is a freak accident, if there are no changes made, it’s only going to happen again eventually. There’s no reason that could justify the risk of playing without them.
This is heartbreaking. My thoughts go to Johnson’s family. As well as the other player involved. I hope he gets the help he needs as I imagine he’s feeling pretty crappy right now. Freak accident, no one’s fault, but I remember reading about when that young girl was struck with a puck in the stands and died, the player whose stick that deflected off of had a real hard time mental health wise as well.
