GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Ducks (10.30.23) | Penguins Finish Four-Game Home Stand

The Penguins honored Adam Johnson ahead of tonight’s game versus Anaheim, sharing moments from his NHL debut and the night he scored his first NHL goal with Pittsburgh in his home state of Minnesota, while fans stood and clapped and players from both teams circled around center ice. The Penguins wore “AJ 47” decals on their helmets for their former teammate, who tragically lost his life on Saturday in a terrible accident on the ice while playing for the Nottingham Panthers of England’s Elite Ice Hockey League. He was 29.

Erik Karlsson kicked off the scoring early for the Penguins. Evgeni Malkin passed the puck to Karlsson on the point for a one-timer. Minutes later, the Ducks answered with a goal of their own from Jakob Silfverberg. The 1st ended tied, 1-1. The Ducks took advantage of an early 2nd period power play to take the lead. Frank Vatrano got his 9th goal in 9 games, but the Penguins also got a power-play goal of their own in the 2nd. The roles were reversed this time, with Karlsson passing to Malkin for his one-timer. And just like the 1st, the 2nd period also ended in a tie of 2-2. Only a minute into the 3rd, Radim Zohorna tapped a rebound in on his backhand to give the Penguins the lead. Unfortunately, that was short-lived with the Ducks’ Mason McTavish evening the score once again. Late in the period, the Ducks took two penalties. With their first man out of the box, McTavish was able to sneak behind the Penguins defense for a breakaway. He got back-to-back goals and would seal the win for the Ducks. The game ended 4-3 in favor of Anaheim.
