I saw some people on Twitter calling out the players defending Petgrave and saying they were standing by a murderer. Hockey players will literally assault another player if they land a clean hit on their teammate, so no, they wouldn’t side with him if this was intentional (and there is no way in hell it was). Twitter is a fucking cesspool.

  2. Practical-Chair-9854

Had someone on discord argue that he wasn’t trying to kill him just trying to “kick him to break up a play” lmfao. I went on a tangent on how no player in the entire history of hockey has ever even thought about trying that.

  3. KingGuy124

i know twitter can be a cesspool and what not, but half of the twitter accounts posting about this don’t know nothing about hockey and you can tell easily. That one end wokeness account is insane.

  4. adalaza

The vast majority of those batshit racist clowns that have taken over Twitter in recent months really have never seen a hockey game let alone be able to comment on intentionality

I firmly believe that most things most people say most of the time are fundamentally for their own benefit.

Seeing or hearing of something horrifying can be upsetting, and people go grasping for easy explanations. “He did it on purpose!” “Ban skates!” Whatever.

This isn’t to excuse people accusing Petgrave of murder of course – it’s to explain that they are being fundamentally unserious and aren’t thinking beyond how their words make _them_ feel when they click Post. At best maybe they are thinking of the reaction they’ll get from their audience.

This nonsense isn’t worth anyone’s time and in a better world, barely anyone would even see it – instead people were able to reach this guy on social media and now their moronic remarks are being repeated and spread by people in the name of journalism. To what end?

Anyway. Johnson’s death was horrific and tragic and accidental, and I hope Petgrave can find some peace about it without being troubled by the shit being said by a bunch of people who need to go back to spending their usual amount of time discussing hockey: none.

If you search Petgraves name on Twitter, the very first Tweet that comes up literally calls him an ‘anti-white terrorist’. The third tweet claims that the ‘anti white media’ is trying to cover ip his murder. A few more tweets down literally has a horribly racist AI art of the incident and talks about how it’s now ‘legal for black people to murder white people on TV’.

Absolutely revolting. The poor guy is already devastated by a horrible accident and these scumbag racists are piling on to push a narrative

  7. I can say with near certainty that the scum calling Petgrave a murderer would be silent/cheering if a tragic **accident** resulted in a black man dying.

I’m a regular white dude born and raised in Canada, so I’m aware that I don’t have the lived experience of a PoC, but I do have extensive academic experience directly relating to racial, ethnic, and religious extremism; and the various hate groups in “developed” Western democratic nations. I can’t actually prove any of this because I don’t want to dox myself, so I’m not going to link any of my work.

The “story” and video of the incident is being circulated among various hate groups/communities/bubbles, and there are a lot of people who have never seen a hockey game in their life chiming in on the “murder”. The **only** reason for this is because it can serve as a trigger for further hatred.

They don’t care about facts—they latch onto anything that can be twisted into “proof” of their extremist ideology. A white man dying directly because—*[don’t you dare take this as me saying that this is even remotely Petgrave’s fault]*—of a black man, is exactly that. You can’t reason with them.

If you are going to engage, don’t try to argue with them, don’t try to explain the situation, don’t do anything to refute their arguments, don’t drive traffic and attention to their pages/accounts/blogs/etc. **They do not care.** Your only direct engagement with hate should be to report the comments—it’s hard, and the natural reaction to call them a cunt and start arguing is strong, but it’s not worth it.

Instead, focus on positive messages. Upvote, retweet, like, etc. words of empathy and compassion, post your own messages of support. Limit the impact of hate speech by maximising positivity.

So this is I think the second player who has come out and said this now? I can’t believe I got into arguments with idiots who were actually saying there was intent. Some of them even claimed they played a lot of hockey (sure ya did). God damn people say the stupidest shit on the internet

  9. XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

Look I’m not trying to be Don Cherry here, but the only reason people say outta pocket things online is because they’ll never get punched in the mouth.

On a different note, I knew I knew Petgrave’s name. He had a handful of AHL games in Utica. I saw him come through and ironically play against WBS there years Johnson was here.

I love the AHL because you always end up finding a few guys on every team that you saw as a rookie/up and comer.

The dead giveaway people dont know what the fuck theyre talking about is when they start trying to analyze what petgrave was thinking (“hE wAs LoOkInG aT hIm” is one ive seen a lot) between glancing off the other player and impact. its hilarious how much thought they think he could put into it in the tenth of a second it happened. Symptom of being completely clueless and trying to analyze something that happened at car crash speed in super slow mo.

another giveaway to knowing fuck all is “ive never seen a leg come up like that without *being* hit”. [sure](https://twitter.com/meowfiala/status/1719099806893904068)

  11. PersonalTrade7334

Seems like the majority of people on instagram, twitter and TikTok think it was intentional, all I’m seeing are heavily upvoted comments that it is, which is crazy to me. When I saw it I didn’t think for a second that it could be.

  12. Shaftell

I looked up his name on Twitter and it really was about race. A lot of people, some even claim they don’t watch hockey, say that it was deliberate and how things would’ve been different if the situation was swapped. Ridiculous really. The poor guy is going through something unimaginable and now you have these racist people dumping on him online. Why?

  13. Cuppa-Tea-Biscuit

Let me guess, last week those trolls were experts in geopolitics and a few years ago they were expert epidemiologists?

  14. ButDoesItCheckOut

    “They can go to hell”

That’s the reply. That right there is the reply to anyone stupid enough to say this was intentional.

  15. Didn’t realize how many sick click bait people I follow until this. Good to know unfollowed them all. Don’t know of many people if any in the hockey world that think that was Matts initial plan. That’s fucking crazy.

The entire hockey world stands with you Matt!

  16. IWanttoBuyAnArgument

Seems a lot of people need someone to blame for everything bad that happens.

Sometimes it’s nobody’s fault. Tragic ACCIDENTS do happen.

And anyone who has ever played hockey at a high enough level has seen injuries, broken bones, missing teeth, torn and destroyed tendons and ligaments, and yes, skate cuts.

This one was tragic, and the absolutely hateful reaction has made it yet another example of human frailty.

I’ll wager half the people calling for an “investigation” have never had a pair of skates on their feet, or if they have, for sure they’ve never held a damned hockey stick.

What the fuck is wrong with some people?

  17. JustNotHaving_It

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. The people who are attacking Petgrave can go to hell, and frankly the type of people who would do what they’re doing should go to hell POST-HASTE.

  18. johannesBrost1337

Man I got people coming out of the woodworks who have NEVER seen a minute of hockey saying how crazy it was that this guy deliberately killed somebody on the ice. People are so fucking thirsty for some drama it blows my mind. Fuck the fuck off with that bullshit.

  19. Also_Steve

Maybe it was the fact that I had to watch someone almost drown during a seizure today, but I have so fucking little tolerance for these people I could snap. That man’s got more than enough to deal with right now and they’re helping not a fucking thing but their own social media engagement numbers. Don’t think there’s a site on Gods Gigablast Internet that I could say what I think about these kinds of people without ending up on some list.

  20. TwoHeadedPanthr

As soon as I saw that Matt Walsh chimed in on Twitter I knew exactly what was happening. It was pretty clear from the video that it was a freak accident where his skate and the other players clipped right as he was bumped causing the pivot. No player is going to swing their leg up like that intentionally, and certainly no player on the other team would tolerate it if that’s what happened. Nottingham players would want his head if they in any way thought it was intentional.

  21. Truly psychotic. This was going to haunt Matt Petgrave for the rest of his life already, to accuse him of intent is just monstrously stupid

And I know I’m making an inference here but I really can’t help but think that the majority of these takes are racially motivated

  22. yodazer

Anyone who thinks that was intentional is either brain dead, never laced them up, or both. I’m 26. I’ve played hockey since I was 3, played some in college, did a lot in hockey. I’ve seen the video. No way that dude could even do what he was doing on purpose. That’s two skates clipping each other causing one person to tumble. People who have never played don’t realize how easy it is to make a player’s legs kick up like that. You have a lot of moment going forward and it that knick knocks your skate back, you could very easily have your skate kicked up high. It’s an unfortunate, terrible accident, but that’s what it is. If people could stop being shitholes to this poor man, that would be great. He has to live with this his entire life. So many what if’s. Fuck the people making it hard for him

  23. ARussianSheep

The Facebook and Twitter posts/comments have been gross. Calling the guy a murderer and say he needs to be locked up for life.

The poor guy will probably have a hard time ever lacing up skates as it is already, he’s bound to have a degree of ptsd around playing. I feel horribly for him right now and hope he can find some sort of peace in this storm.

  24. Torpedospacedance

    Everything about this is awful.
