Trading in a time of panic is a Chiarelli type move though, so use caution. I say send Campbell down and give Pickard a game in net. It's a low-key bold mode, and will clear some cap space for a 23 man roster.
This Oilers team is a cautionary tale of wanting something too badly. Cup or Bust? Trading and selling assets for a 'now' that the team could have over rated. And talking tough all off-season like Conor McGregor before a fight, and losing badly anyway.
This off-season, I thought I read somewhere 6 Oilers players became new fathers. Our captain, after two long playoff runs, decides for everyone that he's going to end summer early and summon all the new dads, players healing from past long seasons, and those that may simply want a mental break or rest from the rink and media and fans, to stop everything and join the captain skates early. Looks a whole lot like gripping the stick too tightly, if you know what I mean. I'm skeptical that was the right move. I was then, and I still am. Mental and physical rest is deeply valuable.
Oh man, and let's not get going on the whole Zone Defence system change that our players couldn't figure out, loss after loss after loss. Sounds a whole lot like gripping the sticks too tightly again, eh Woody.
To recap, sell off talent we can't afford anymore, talk bigger than you are, sign a broken hockey player that will also eat all the money from the cap increase next season, end the off-season early, attempt a system that doesn't work for your team, and ride it for way too long, stubbornly. Mix all that with injured players, aimless line blending, minimal trust and ice time for the bottom six, and an overall team confidence that is at an all-time low for this group.
Chicken or egg? What started this mess? What was the first domino, and can we go back and stand it back up again? Only time will tell, but this is very ugly right now.

When you know that none of your goalies can win the game for you, why even try?
They are suffering from depression. A team of psychologists might help with some sessions for the entire team and staff. Hypnosis would also help.
