What message was benching Huberdeau sending?

TSN Hockey analyst Jamie McLennan joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss the Flames having finally figured out their offence, what kind of message head coach Ryan Huska was sending by benching the highest-paid player on the team Jonathan Huberdeau for the entire third period, and much more.

  1. Puberdeau’s trying to get by on skill alone. No work ethic. No drive. Feet aren’t moving. Losing puck battles all night. No heart. Wish some scout would have caught this.

  2. Why did he get benched? Simple, he wasn't helping the team when on the ice. Hard to decipher Huberdeau's decline in intensity and productivity since coming to Calgary. Sad to watch.

  3. Hes a 55 point plaher. Stop expecting him to be anything more. The contract he was given is one of the worse all time.

  4. I've been watching and analysing Flames closely for these two years.. And what I see in discourse now is a bit of misunderstanding and blind blaming of Huberdeau. The reason why Huberdeau doesn't produce is purely Calgary problem and its system. They gave a monster contract to a player who isn't able to use his strength and playmaking ability, simply saying who isn't fitting the way Calgary plays south-north. Jonathan is used to have layers in offence with D activation. In Calgary he has no support=options for a play. Why he is benched? Cause he as a player is useless in Calgary setup and he feels this frustration. He doesn't belong there if Calgary isn't changing. And in that context, yes, contract is insane.

  5. At around the 3 minute mark on the video, Huberdeau is shown with his head down. Looks like he was sulking. I didn’t watch so I’m not sure. Does anyone know what was happening at that point?
