In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps victory over the New Jersey Devils. This was a game that saw that Capitals jump to a 3 goal lead in the first period. Things changed in the second as New Jersey tied and then went ahead in the game. This was a different Capitals team that had some good push back. This was a team victory that saw goals from Ovechkin, Mantha, two from Strome, McMichael and Milano. This was Hunter Shepards NHL debut and Dan thinks he played well despite what the box score shows. This was a game that Rasmus Sandin get injured and not return.

One thing I noticed is Kuzy smiling. We all know what he's capable of remembering that Cup run. If he can get his form back he's at the very least tradeable or even better gets us back in the playoffs.
Strome is growing into a 1C role possibly too and McMichael is probably getting better and better. That 2nd period scares me but NJ is capable of scoring at will so… They're far from out of the woods with their game but this one was promising. Especially if Mantha gets his confidence up and can use that wicked shot he has.
Where did that energy come from? Rallying around Shepherd?
Now that was beautiful hockey. Like a different team! I could FEEL their determination! Those are my caps! Fast and gritty play the whole time, omg it was wonderful and I'm elated. I hope they study this tape plenty, just like the losses. And we got what I mentioned the other day – momentum. That drove us..

Listening as a lurker for a while, love your show, not even a Caps fan as you know. It seems crazy that there was talk about trades and a reboot already. There's 82 games in a season, let the team figure itself out and find best line combinations. Is the team complete? No, I'm sure there'll be some trades eventually, but this early? Dang. Patience people, you're spoiled having a good team if you demand perfection this early in the season. Glad that Shephard played well, I was interested in how he'd play in the NHL.
Something was definitely said to the boys about penalties as they only took 1.
Strome and Carlson are looking great. feherevary looked really solid easily the best game he's had this season. That big hit he had was awesome.
Id say the Caps played 42 great minutes of hockey. All around a great game to watch
Much needed win. Looks like we are going in the right direction. Good mix of veterans and younger players contributing to the scoreboard. Strome and Ovechkin look really good together. Kuzy is driving to the net well, and wingers like Milano and McMichaels are going to the net too. Not to mention good physical play from Fehervary and Wilson. I agree with Carbs setting down Protas. I don't think he is doing a great job at 4th line center. This is something we need to fix, especially when we have to play physically tougher teams. As far as defense, Jensen looks a step behind. Hoping he can get it together. He's been pretty good in the past.
Damn. Need Sandin back fast, but of course not before he is 100%. Not at this stage of season and career. Just hope he is good to go within a month.
The great thing is this caps team has a seriously motivated coach who is paying 100% attention at all times and the team is definitely trending in the right direction. A lot to work with and getting Mantha going is vital. Ovechkin is the player he has been the last five years it seems so 40 goals seems likely. The caps have a good shot at a wild card spot. Trending the right way. Again I just hope Sandin is back 100% within a month. Long term will hurt. Need a relatively healthy caps season.
Strome is the future of the franchise as far as C goes. Can’t play on any line you ask him for. Great guy, can shoot and pass. I pray he never requests a trade and wants to stick around til he retires…. Probably won’t happen tho.
I’m with you, Dan. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that win was really important and could really turn things around. They’ve played decent in some of the losses and could have been different if the puck fell their way a few more times.
Watching Wild vs Caps at this minute, first time seeing the Blue Caps jerseys, not too bad, not sure which show covered jerseys but I'm also seeing New Jerseys Black jerseys in highlights and they'd get my vote for worst jersey.
