The Detroit Red Wings are guaranteed a top 4 draft pick at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft; one of the most perceivably stacked drafts in the past few years. With top talents like Alexis Lafrenière, Quinton Byfield, and Tim Stützle regarded as the one, two, and three picks, what would happen if the Red Wings dropped to 4th overall?

Well, today we’re talking about Yaroslav Askarov, a goalie in the SKA St. Petersburg system in the KHL, who suited up primarily for the SKA-Neva St. Petersburg team in the VHL. Askarov is regarded by many as the best goaltending prospect since Carey Price, and a potential franchise altering talent with future Vezina potential. This status has propelled him towards being considered a legitimate top 10, maybe even top 5 talent. It is with this idea in mind that I wanted to bring up the idea of Askarov and the Detroit Red Wings.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. I think this years draft will be wild after top 3. After Lafreniere, Byfield, and Stuzle, I feel every team has their own idea of who's the next best pick. Can't wait to see how to plays out.

  2. Hey Lego, here's a hypothetical question for you – The Red Wings get pick 4, if you were Yzerman would you look to be trading this pick with New Jersey for at least their 6th and 10th picks given the depth of talent available in this draft???

  3. I think an interesting question would be, if Detroit isn’t the team to take Askarov (because we do definitely need a future goalie), which team does? Who else needs a replacement goalie in the next 3-5 years that doesn’t have any prospect they’re sure of, and is in a position where they might be able to get Askarov?

  4. I'd be elated if the Red Wings drafted Yarislov Askarov at 4th! I've been wanting them to select a future goalie, since Petr Mrazek was traded to Philly.

  5. tbh i get t, we need a goalie and askarov is a beast, but the lowest we could pick is 4, i would love him in a red wings jersey dont get me wrong, but even 4 would be too high for a goalie IMO when someone like drysdale, raymond and stutzle would probably still be available

  6. Aaaaand here we are. Askarov makes a ton of sense at #4 and I could see Yzerman taking him.

  7. Well, the Wings did drop to #4. I wouldn't be upset at all if they picked him. I'm not too convinced that Larsson will be a solid NHL goalie.

  8. We all know what’s gonna happen, the wings are either gonna take him at 4 and he turns out to be really bad, or the wing pass on him, he goes 5th and wins multiple Vezinas.

  9. Askarov is the best goalie prospect I THINK i ever seen in my life. Ask makes Wallesdt look like a bac
    kup.
