San Jose Sharks Acquire Calen Addison. Who Is He And Where Does He Fit Into Their Long Term Plans?

The San Jose Sharks acquired right-handed defenseman Calen Addison from the Minnesota Wild for a 2026 sixth-round pick and forward Adam Raska. Start by examining the trade and why this is a homerun by General Manager Mike Grier as he took advantage of another team’s problem and put resources into solving one of his biggest issues: a puck-moving defenseman who can run the power play. Next, dive into Addison’s draft profiles, scouting reports, and what the analytics say about his time with the Wild. Finally, where does Addison fit into the Sharks’ current and long-term plans, and who should be Addison’s partner as they continue trying to rebuild their blueline on the fly?

  1. In response to what you said in the chat replay, I can't really give it a grade because I don't know enough about Addison. I know on capfriendly it's fairly unanimously being voted as a win for us (70 votes, 65 Sharks, 4 Wild, 1 fair deal). People commenting their surprised that the price was so low, suggesting that a fair price for him was more like a 2nd or a 3rd. Some suggestion that the coach didn't like him and that led to reduced ice time and the trade.

Considering the price was Raska (who I liked but don't think he had much of a chance here) and not just a 5th, but a 2026 5th (people often say each year a pick is pushed back is roughly the equivalent of 1 round later in the draft), I'm very happy with the chance taken. I still won't grade it because I don't know enough about the player, but if you want to ask me to grade it in 20 years I'll be happy to if I'm still alive.

  2. Even if Addison turns out to be a bust (I don’t think he will), at least Grier identified the need and went out and got it.
