THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF DEVANTE SMITH-PELLY’S CAREER

Raegan Subban sits down to chat with Stanley Cup champion, Devante Smith-Pelly about the ups and downs of his hockey career. Including, being a black player in the NHL, scoring a massive goal to help the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup and playing with Alex Ovechkin

  1. "Smith Pelly! 2 nothing!" will forever be my favorite call. Love DSP; a Cap for life.

  2. I'm conflicted about how to bring up the racist incidents in an interview like this. On the one hand he is a black hockey player (that much is obvious) and that angle has to be covered, but (like Idris Elba's comments recently) he's also just a hockey player and it's kind of sad that in a short seven-minute interview recapping his career, he has to spend nearly a quarter talking about one idiot fan who (to be fair) was punished and given a lifetime ban. I don't know if that (the racist incident or incidents) should be a seperate clip (or another video address specifically to that) but it's complex in that it's almost giving power and oxygen to that idiot fan that he gets to be talked about and made part of the narrative in DSP career when DSP being from Scarborough (a hockey and black hockey player hotbed) or being a playoff performer (both in Anaheim and Washington) doesn't get that attention.

  3. I can't think of a player in CAPS history that for most of his time with the team was a valuable player but not someone you'd think of as pivotal in that role. Including DSP. Until the 2018 playoffs and he became a permanent fan favorite in DC with his effort and sacrifice to help win.
