The Buffalo Sabres’ 2023 Hockey Fights Cancer honoree is Sophia LaBorde, who was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of liver cancer at age 12 in 2022 and remains in treatment at Roswell Park after enduring several rounds of chemotherapy and having her tumor surgically removed. A year ago, Hockey Fights Cancer celebrations brought together Sophia and Sabres 2022 HFC honoree Melissa Vargo. The two formed an instant bond that led to Melissa customizing a special pair of shoes for Sophia to wear onto the ice for her ceremonial puck drop. Despite an uncertain road ahead, Sophia’s strength and determination has inspired her parents Alicia and Derek, her favorite player Rasmus Dahlin, and her pediatric oncologist Dr. Ajay Gupta, who all marvel at her ability to celebrate life every day.
