A friend of mine works in sports media. Apparently, Franchesco Aquillini hated Cheech and wanted him out as color commentator. Instead of contesting it, Cheech took the high road and instead took a position doing the national broadcasts, creating distance between him and Francesco.
As a result, it does not surprise me that they changed the broadcast coverage for HNIC to not pair up Shorty and Cheech on the Leaf/Canucks game. The Aquillinis do not want Cheech to be connected with the Canucks anymore, otherwise fans will ask him to come back.
It’s a shitty situation for him, but he handled it like a pro.

It warms my heart that a huge swath of Canucks fandom appreciates just how fortunate we are to have top tier broadcasters like Shorty and Cheech. The Vancouver market has been spoiled for decades!

Did anyone hear Shorty talking about this during the Ottawa game? He sounded SO excited. Tomlinson didn’t know and said “oh I was wondering why you were looking for places to eat and said you were excited about the lack of utensils”. It was adorable.
