Brad Marchand trip on Timothy Liljegren – Tough Call Review

Timothy Liljegren went into the boards very awkwardly with the help of Brad Marchand, but not because of Brad Marchand. That’s the difference between a minor penalty here and a suspension.

  1. I think the key point here that has been highlighted is that Liljegren's foot is way off the ice before Marchand ever touches it. Knowing this, that from-behind angle that looks lieke he's shoveling his foot off the ice is not that at all. We now know he doesn't even make contact with the foot until later. It was the body contact that knocked Liljegren off balance. It was not a "can opener."

  2. You have more faith in Brad Marchand than I do. Marchand knew EXACTLY what he was doing with putting the stick between the legs.

  3. They both put their sticks on one another…the difference being, one stick is holding the guy up and preventing him from crashing into the boards, while the other stick is placed between the guys legs then with two hands pries one leg up..clearly…distinctly…deliberately. 5 games

  4. Somebody hasn't played hockey before, I think it's safe to assume? Marchand practices 2 hours a day for the last 25 years at least and you don't think he placed his stick between his legs and got body position on the guy for any other reason other than to injure him or settle an in game vendetta? That's why it's called the "can opener"! If he just wants to go heavy on the puck, you get your stick above the defenders stick. If you want to pull the "can opener" and injure someone you put it between their legs ! Marchand has proven he has a lack of respect for anybody's health or career ! AKA Kromwall,Salo,Sedin,Brassard,Niskanen,Strahman,Borowiecki, etc etc etc !!!!!!!

  5. it's a can opener, plain and simple. Funny how many times these random and unfortunate situations always happen around #63. Someday it's going to happen to him and the Boston Media and fan base will go nuts.

  6. The leaf player skates in front of Marchand to check.
When he hit Marchand he threw himself off balance.
2 minute penalty to leaf player, interference!👍

  7. Seeing how the team take on the character of their captain, the rest of the league should watch out.

  8. At first, Marchand puts his left shoulder inside to regain body position and by doing so his stick is between the legs of Liljegren, that's fine.

But why would he then raise his stick? What motive does he have to do so?

If he wanted to protected himself the best course of action would have been to keep both hand up. But, Marchand drops his right arm and shoulder to generate enough force to lift Liljegren legs.

At that point I can't give Marchand the benefit of the doubts. He HAS to put a lot a force to get that leg high.

His intention was clearly to throw Lilejegren out of balance. The big problem is that it's what cause Liljegren leg to hit the board at a very bad angle.

Yes things happen quickly, but it's not like Marchand is 17 and just started playing the physical game the man almost has 1000 games played in the NHL alone. He knew exactly what was the worse thing that could happen and unfortunely for Liljegren, it did.

And he is a repeated offender and the player who go the most suspension in the league history.

  9. I've watched Marchand for years. He is a rat. This was a rat play & the narrative from 'Tough Call' tries to frame it as if the Leaf D-man was somehow equally responsible for what unfolded. That assessment is wrong. When Marchand realizes Liljegren has inside body position on him, he angles his stick out in front, then back in between Liljegren's legs. When Liljgren hits the brakes as they approach the boards, naturally your left leg has little weight on it & that's when Marchand levers his stick, lifting Liljegren's leg completely off the ice. It's called a can-opener & as Marchand has done the same thing in the past, he knows exactly what he's doing.

Anyone who doesn't think it's a can-opener move is either a Bruins fan, an idiot, or has never played the game. When you slam on the brakes at speed, your leading foot (in this case the right foot) takes most of the braking load. The trailing leg often has little, to no weight on it, especially if you're in physical contact with an opposing player. Easy to see in slow motion, but likely harder to see live as the ref McCauley was behind Marchand, who was behind Liljgren. There are a number of NHLers who are viewed as dirty players. Marchand is one of them.

  10. Oh. The uploaded has no idea what he's talking about.

Marchand performs what's called a can opener. The history of a dirty player like marchand, adding the injury. This is suspendable for sure.

  11. The stick isn't going for the puck, he's using it as a lever to take the leg out, and it's in a dangerous area of the rink. It was a crappy move by Marchand, and done on purpose.

  12. Timothy Liljegren did no raise his left foot before Brad Marchand lifted it with his stick. It is incomprehensible that anyone might think that he did. Why would a hockey player raise one of his skates as he was trying to avoid slamming into the boards? Brad Marchand's stick went directly between Timothy Liljegren's leg. At the same time, Brad Marchand left knee leaned into the back of Timothy Liljegren's right knee. Brad Marchand obviously and without a doubt lifted his stick upwards while his stick was behind Timothy Liljegren's foot. At the same time, Brad Marchand used his left leg and foot to put pressure on Timothy Liljegren's right leg and foot. This is an example of a guy who has made a living out of cheap shots at the top of his trade. Tough Call shows a lack of understanding of the basics of skating and hockey with this Easy Call.

  13. Do not be stupid. Of course Marchand did that shit on purpose. He has played a shit ton of hockey. That''s why it's called the can opener. It was done on purpose. People thinking a PRO did this on accident have never played real sports.

  14. 3 ppl like this video call, because anyone who has ever played hockey knows you never force your stick inbetween a players legs.

  15. @toughcall if the play was at the puck, CLEARLY AHEAD of him in the corner, why the hell did his stick snake around his leg and get trapped on his skate. Silly call sir

  16. Seriously who makes these videos and how dense are they?
    1. Battling for position: stick across hips and stick in feet are not the same thing.
    2. Liljegren is awkwardly turning his foot and it’s off the ice? Look at his positioning, he’s getting on his outside edge and can’t place his skate back on the ice due to Marchands stick.
I’m not saying it’s intentional and the one part this commentator gets right is that players have to be in control of their stick, especially in the most dangerous are of the ice.

  17. Haha. No intent?? Have you ever watched Rat play?? The guy is a real piece. There is hours on YouTube of Marchand doing things like this. He knows exactly what he's doing.

  18. Well yeah, the foot was going up without pressure from the stick because his other foot got slew-footed. It may not be an intentional can-opener, but it was certainly an intentional slew-foot. The stick between the legs was just a benefit to Marchand that gave him even more leverage.

  19. I find it amazing that they guy who is the poster child for these kinds of moves still has defenders saying "oh it was just a hockey play". I will tip my hat, it was a sneaky play but it couldn't be any more clear on the replay what his intent was.

  20. Clean, they did the same exact move on eachother (as narrator says). Marchand is just 6" shorter than Liljegren so he has leverage in this situation sending liljegren into the boards. This is why they call the corners the dirty areas because its easy to get injured flying into the corner for a puck while battling with another player 🤷‍♂️ if Marchand was the same height it wouldnt have sent him flying, if Marchand brought his stick up it would have been a high stick. People crying are biased AF against Marchand and its completely ridiculous

  21. Do you even follow hockey. That is a signature Marchand move and he has been suspended for it more than once. There is no way to counter that move unless you know it's coming which some players do expect from Marchand and are prepared for it.

  22. Nah he swept his left foot up into the boards.

    Youre terrible at this.

  23. This is the most bias view I've seen on here… "they both put their sticks on one another" meanwhile you haven't recognized the difference in placement between the two sticks. While Liljegren's stick is at waist height, Marchand has his between Liljegren's legs. Where is the mention to the fact that Marchand frequently finds himself in these "unfortunate accidents"… you might as well just disclose that you're a Boston fan

  24. The most dirtiest player in the league for years does another dirty play, lets defend him.

  25. Just all around a shit call from you bud, that was clear intent to injure. Weather the stick lifted the leg or the obvious slew-foot, marchand needs to get his rat ass off the ice.
