Is Age a Big Reason for the New York Islanders Current Struggles?

Is age a big reason for the New York Islanders early-season struggles? Is it a reason they can’t seem to play well in the third period? Or is this team slumping because of other factors? We delve into that question on today’s show.

Plus we have a full preview and the keys to victory for tonight’s game against the Vancouver Canucks and we have our weekly Farm Report on all things Bridgeport Islanders.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. I compared this roster to our roster from 1-0 game 7 loss to the Lightning. This team is actually 3/4 of a year YOUNGER. I think Lee and Martin are the only two we can point to who have taken a step back. I would agree it's more lack of scoring talent than age.

  2. Islanders if they decide to move on from Lee have a few options. He is 7M Cap Cost but only owed over 10M. Hence the buyout for 2 seasons left is 6.9M in actual paying. Its odd as the Cap Cost in last two seasons is only 1.75M but the 2nd season is over 4.4M. Next year it would save over 4M but costing less than 3M in Cap Cost. Another option is to retain half the Salary for 3.5M each year. If they can find a team who will trade for him to buy out. Then it would probably require them to give up a draft pick or something etc. None of the options are Great or easy to pick. If Lee can produce 40 point seasons then a team might pay him 4M. If he can get 28 Goals with 50 Points this year. Otherwise trading him for another bad contract like Garland. I think they need to trade Pelech too. I wish they had Carson Soucy over him for example.

  3. Hello Gil, it seams like it’s the age 🎉 today’s young players skate very fast. They were fine with Barry trotz and sticking with defense and then it creatived offense 😅if they would of one the cup two or three years ago we would not care if they lose now 🎉 right now not going to a game 😮great stuff Gil..thanks

  4. Age is a factor but not an excuse for failure. isles are just old and regardless of age just aren't a talented bunch. Caps, pens are just as old just a hair older yet they have overcome bad starts to get into playoff race. Both won tonight and are just more talented than isles. This goes back to the oldest gm in the nhl running the show. 21, 27, 29, 44, 15, 17, 53, up front are all over 30. None of them even in their prime was a top scorer ppg all star type player. Add in top shut down d 3, 6 just under 30 and 24, 40 over 30 and this is one old bunch. 27, 29, 17, 53, 3, 6, 24 were all snow picks between '08-'13. Isles should have had the re-enforcements to replace/push these vets out of the line-up by now. Snow whiffing on the high picks where you get the skill guys/scorers didn't help. Nino (who was mishandled), strome, dal colle, ho sang, bellows-not one turned into a big time nhl scorer. Plus 13-age 26-can't seem to put it together being mish mashed with this old slow combo of mid-bottom liners. 26-age 22- appears to be another first round bust lost up front. Snow's draft failure can take part of the blame for this old roster. Louzers failure to move these old guys out before they rot and failure to get re-enforcements into the system by trading firsts, seconds, thirds away and hampering cap with long term deals is fully to blame for this aged mess. And funny as isles and their weak pp go nowhere with lame-0 tocchet coach of next opponent van. suddenly looks like a capable nhl coach. I guess it helps when canucks have a few skill guys to score like petterson and boeser + hughes to run a top pp. And why do isles always draft guys with questionable skating the knock on their resumes? Slow guys like lee don't age well into their 30's. Guys that can skate last longer. Thats why snow addressed that drafting barzal and beau in '15 first round. Remember it was said paul coffey could play till he was 50 with his skating ability. Next gm will take note of that…

  5. Vancouver is overrated! Have you seen their schedule since day one??!! Most of Vancouvers games have been against trashy hockey teams!!!! Look it up!

  6. Their downfall Is age AND lousy and inept coaching GIL. They have actually looked tired by the third! This team can't hit an open net and they have real trouble passing the puck between themselves! Nobody is this bad! It's like they dont even practice! Promoting Lambert was OBVIOUSLY the cheapest option- certainly not the best option!

  7. Lou Loserillo would rather rinse and repeat with that loser Lee that produces NOTHING over giving IShkakov the chance he earned. Lou Loserillo is a disgrace. I can’t stand that arrogance piece of garbage.

  8. yes…big time. and the speed that we acquired this year and last year like engvell and Gauthier aren't skilled players who'se speed translates into production either. barzal too fast, yes, scores…not so much ..I mean he's top line wing now and he never breaks 25 goals…where else does that happen but here

  9. Gm Gil. I am wondering whether the team's decline in toughness, close checking, and defensive mistakes are the core of their problems and age would contribute to all 3. But, there are so many other problems this team has that I don't think its any one thing. It does appear we are stuck with yet another ownership group NOT committed to winning and more focused on just showing up and keeping the seats filled.

  10. It hurts to say this but it’s going to be a rough game to watch. I can feel it in my gut. Yet, if I’m still awake at that time. I got to watch it

  11. Not necessarily age, but I do think fatigue is a big part of the 3rd period problems. I think these guys are playing real hard to make it work, and they get mentally fatigued and lose a step. A real PP would be a nice addition to take some pressure off, but I guess Mclean has pictures of Yoda and an escort. How else does he remain as PP coach?
Lane with the line blender is really getting to me. I wish he would put ANYONE with Barzal and Bo and let them figure it out while he focuses on the Nelson and Pageau lines. With the Nelson and Bo lines stuttering, I'm seriously questioning Lanes ability to coach an NHL team.

  12. It all goes back to they just can't score!!! Lou hasn't done anything to improve that, and he has to go. If the Isles had one "true" sniper, and another defenseman that could bring the puck to the opponent's blue line, I believe a lot of the problems would be solved

  13. Hi Gil! How many times do we see our “Veterans” struggling to get back? How many? Gil you can’t ask older guys to outskate these younger faster guys. It’s a skill game and we don’t have the legs nor enough skill to compete and succeed. Lesson should be learned but like you say Gil, “Not holding my breath”!! Casey? Is he kidding!! Telling fans to stay home if you’re gonna express your displeasure with the coach or Managment? Easy for him to say. He’s cashing his check and his production sucks. Unacceptable fir a player of his status to say this. He ran it back saying “I love the fans and they know it”. However Casey—it seems working or playing for this organization means you have a job for life!! Know what Gil—-with Casey doing this—-tells me a lot about the comfort zone and attitude our team seems to have. Lastly, bottom line? If Canuck fans choose to boo Bo—go right ahead!! Take care Gil

  14. Its beyond age, thats only 1 of yheir problems which are numerous!
Its gonna be difficult if not impossible to correct the problems with this team, especially with what Lamoriello has done! Its like hea sabbotaged this club for years to come!

  15. For starters tight off the bat if i could,i would get rid of aho, lee, martin, wahlstrom, clutterbuck and bolduc thats serious rebuild territory and im holding back on a couple others!

  16. I dont think it needs to be said at this point, but i imagine Parisi is retiring, hes not coming back for this!

  17. You know, you can blame Lambert all you want, he is not a great coach, that said, wedont have enough talent here! Even if they played a clean mistake free game and constantly worked hard, they cant score and thats not lberts fault! That always has been the biggest factor keeping this team from winning!
