  1. I hate Jim Benning. Fuck Benning for life. I will never forgive him.

  2. SpectreFire

To be fair to Benning, it’s really hard to multi-task when he and Weisbrod share a single half-braincell between them.

  3. Feralwestcoaster

We should build a statue of benning. Out of wood. And burn it. Wait, is that an effigy? Cool, fuck him.

  4. CuffMcGruff

Picturing Tanev packing another brimmer while he waits for a call from jimbo who just forgot he existed

  5. Lancelot_Stroller

Man, this makes me sad. Tanev was awesome. He really did give everything to this organization. To be disrespected like that after all of the time he spent is gross. Fuck you Benning.

  6. I don’t have a problem with them not re-signing him, but they should have a plan instead of scrambling to get things done.

    This part 🙁

    > “I was sort of upset by it all. I think if I did it again, maybe you take a bit of the emotion away from it. They did end up offering me [a contract] a couple of hours into free agency. I was already sort of upset. I didn’t really want to be back at that point. I wanted to go somewhere where people wanted me.”

It sounds like now he regrets a bit making that decision while being upset and not re-signing here

Too busy getting Toffoli signed I guess. Oh wait…

  9. VancityRenaults

Was Benning was so fixated on getting OEL that he put everything else on the back burner, including signing Tanev? It’s been reported before that he was close to a deal with ARI one year before the actual trade but it fell through because Coyotes wanted too much.

  10. JerbearCuddles

Old news. Tanev, Stecher and Toffoli all said the same thing. No contact with management. I remember how upset I was we didn’t even talk with Stecher or Toffoli. Tanev at that time I was sort of okay losing, but I still would have liked management to at least speak with him.

  11. Could have got him for the same or less money and not use an asset. Great job as usual but benning

  12. TurbanGhetto

I think we are stupid to trade for him unless it’s miraculously just a mid round pick (it will be much more than that Calgary will be seeking).

We can sign him in the summer for free. He loves this town and organization.

  13. Benning is a true idiot. But many on this sub were happy to have Schmidt over Tanev that summer.

  14. When they say Jim Benning was on a Cup winning FO, they need to add like a bunch of footnotes to that.

  15. PaperweightCoaster

Busy watching OELs draft tape on repeat, we’ve all been there.

  16. TheRealTollah

That offaeasom broke me. Losing all those guys, only to bring in older, worse more expensive players, and giving up the farm for it.

    Fuck Benning.

There have been lots of bad GMs over the years who have made bad moves. Guys like Millbury and Chiarelli. But nobody has seemed so completely at sea in the job like Benning did. Being a competent GM was just clearly way beyond his capabilities as a thinker.

  18. Benning, the oily food stain you just can’t seem to wash out.

  19. souleman96

Canucks fan from Rochester, NY here. Watched Tanev play in college at RIT for a few years and was ecstatic to see him picked up for the cup run. I am just getting back into regularly watching hockey after 9 years of having it on the back burner raising twins (good year to jump back in, eh?) and reading this article is absolutely heart breaking.

  20. dattroll123

    never communicated with Tanev
    was too fixated on OEL
only offered Tanev a contract at the last minute
loses Tanev, Toffoli, and Markstrom to UFA for nothing

    Ladies and gentlemen, Jim Benning!!!

  21. Motor-Post-8845

Jim the shithead benning creating a lasting legacy

  22. DisplacedNovaScotian

This makes it even more infuriating, and that’s saying something. Our D has literally had a Tanev-sized hole since he left. This is exactly the player whose contributions we’ve been trying to replace ever since! He was important for the PK, as an even strength partner for Hughes, etc. And all of that as an RD. And Benning just sort of…didn’t make an offer ’til free agency already started?? That’s not like making a late offer to a middling fourth line checker. This is a player who can be a key contributor to any team out there. So when you do that, you’re effectively saying goodbye because of course Tanev is going to get an offer right away!! And what even was the rationale?? Did they “run out of time” a la Toffoli?? If they let their UFAs walk as some sort of business decision, that’s one thing. But it doesn’t seem like that was it. It seems it just sort of…happened? What a fucking joke.

  23. Man the more that is coming out about Benning, I knew he was shit but not like I’m a 5 year old playing be a gm mode shit

  24. Looney_forner

And to think we chose an alleged rapist who never scored 20 goals in any season over him and Toffoli

  25. sasksasquatch

I think this confirms Jim Benning is a terrorists to the Canucks organization.
