The unexpected: Vancs looking like contenders. The Slicks and the Flames, not so much. Obviously just the first quarter of the season and we haven't even begin to speculate on the Christmas trade deadline freeze.
As a Leafs fan, I am more than a little bit envious to see how well Vancouver is doing, but I'm also happy to see them doing so well. Especially out of no where, they've just worked hard as a team to build what they've got
I feel so bad for Horvat. He was a heart and soul guy who deserved to be part of the success Vancouver is having, but sadly, he got screwed over by Benning's cap management. At least they got Hronek out of it, but still.
Not taking anything away from their scorers, but in my opinion the big turnaround comes from the additions of soucy, cole and a healthy hronek. Not like hughes, petterson and miller didn‘t score like that the last few seasons. But vancouvers defense was so bad, they had way less puck possession and more goals against. They had elite offense all the time, but they had poolman, myers on their top4. Cole and soucy, even friedman, helped that team to be this good while helping out demko too.
Take 3 games against the oilers out of the equation(I’m an oilers fan and they wouldn’t have beat the Abbotsford Canucks the first ten games of the season), and the Canucks have won exactly 2 games against playoff projected teams(FLA and DAL). They also lost to NRY, and TOR. The rest of their wins came against NSH(2), MON, SJS, NYI, OTT, STL. Lost to CGY, PHI. They play SEA and SJS twice each the next five games, so their record will likely get padded a bit more, but I see them coming down to earth after that.
oh man, mentioning the 2011 game 7 and possible rematch this year… A bit early… But godDAMN that would be a gratifying rematch to see Vancouver get redemption after 12 years. I'm still bitter about that game haha. If it goes down, they gotta win! For the twins, Lu, Kesler… I can still feel the anger and tension in the air downtown Vancouver that night as we slowly realized we were going to lose the game which ultimately turned into a riot lol. Was a disappointing day to say the least, especially knowing that the team was not going to be the same next year, literally. Took a while but look at us now! And we will likely have this strong core for the foreseeable future which is an assuring thought.
As a Canucks fan since the early 2000's, I am really enjoying their current success. But I expect to eventually be disappointed, either later on this season or in the playoffs. Sorry, I've been disappointed too many times. : (
