off topic question, but. when people say McDavid is the best in the world already (or will be once he passes Crosby) and will be for the next 15 years. as far as players currently drafted or playing? I agree. what do you think the odds are though, that, before McDavid's 'reign' as the best is finished, another new talent comes up who is equally matched as a rival, or even better? nothing says it can't happen. in an alternate universe McDavid could've been born earlier and drafted 4 years after Crosby for example. Hell Lemieux could have been drafted a year after that. These types of players are extraordinarily rare but they can hit the league in quick succession.

Trust me Shan, almost every Leafs fan (at least the ones I've known here in Toronto), hated the Phil Kessel deal when it was made, and hated it much more a year later. Toronto, as I'm sure you're well aware, has had an awful awful history of trading 1st round picks that became Elite/HHOF players (Niedermayer, Luongo, Seguin, etc.). On the positive side, the Bruins were stupid enough to get rid of Hamilton/Seguin, which made it much easier to swallow.
Brian Burke is one of the worst GMs I've ever seen in NHL history. Not far off Mike Milbury territory for the shit he pulled here in Toronto. Sincerely hope this trade blows up in his face like the Kessel trade. Sorry Calgary – I like the Flames otherwise. Lol
Thank God you don't run the Flames organization. You're comparing David Schlemko to Hamonic? Have you watched either of them play for any substantial amount of time. Compare their compete level and get back to me. As well, how do teams that just sit back and wait on their picks pan out. You need to go out and take risks and try to make your team better now. You can always make deals to get picks later. This is a great deal for the Flames in every way. Compete level is arguably the most important variable in hockey and Hamonic brings it in spades. Hopefully it will rub off on Dougie and Brodie.

Hamonic is the perfect defensive defensive defensemen to slot in next to Brodie, he fits our cores age group nicely, and has a great contract! If we can manage to get Stone signed I feel we can compete in the playoffs. It'll take a number 1 RW (Kevin Hayes) for me to say we're cup contenders.

As a Flames fan I'm not overly thrilled with the trade. Was hoping that they would fill up depth on the wings instead of adding to the defense. Losing Engelland lost them some grit so they'll need to find a way to replace that. I'm not sold on Smith either, all these aging goaltenders through the last 4 years has proven Raanta was someone Treliving should have pursued instead of experience. I'm still not sold on Gulutzan either, I have no faith in him yet. The only reason why they made the playoffs last year was because of a lucky hot streak that Elliot went on. As a Flames fan I'm worried about the direction this team is headed towards.

This isn't a Burke trade. Has Tre all over it. The window has opened, and we have a large cupboard of really skilled D Men and two really great goalies in Parsons and Gillies coming up. Normally I think you're spot on, but as a Flames STH the team needs this. Plus they might re-sign Stone as well for crazy depth.
Also, Flames are not even close to being the same team as Toronto with Kessel.
Honestly so sad to see Hamonic go, but I knew it was coming. We gotta give Pulock a chance because he's proven himself in Bridgeport

Hamonic arguably makes them a Pacific Divison contender. If they can put it all together and Johnny Hockey and Mike Smith have good seasons I could see them doing well.
if you need an idea of how good the flames can play with a stable top 4 D, look at how they played after they acquired Stone. They went on to win 10 games in a row and made the playoffs.
Love this deal for Calgary. Sure there's some risk involved but name any trade in the history of the NHL that didn't have any risk. Calgary went out and got a legit top 4 defenseman that is on a very cap friendly contract for a reasonable 3 years. Plus, he's the defensive guy Calgary's top 4 needs and he can move the puck well.
Plus, Calgary's doing fine on prospects right now. If we didn't have anybody in the prospect pool coming up and we traded away a first rounder I'd be more worried, but Calgary's got their shelves stocked right now. They can afford to take this risk. Hamonic fits everything Calgary needs. Physical top 4 guy who fits right in to our age group.

I think that they pulled the trigger on this deal precisely because they went with a half measure with smith, and rantaa would have cost us 1st + 2nd anyway (and technically he's only a backup with 30gp last season) plus a cap dump. Not really an end of the world scenario, all they gotta do is win baby

This is why Canadian teams have not won a cup in 24 years. They over value their players and think they are closer than they are. Hamonic had 3 goals, 11 assists and was a -21… he's okay but not a superstar. The Flames need a number 1 center and a goalie to start competing for a cup.
That first round pick should have been protected.

Hamonic has been used as a shutdown defenseman in the metro division for some time. Last year especially, that was one of the most daunting tasks for any defender in the leaugue. Every team in that division had multiple lines that were destroying almost everybody leaugue wide. Anybody who doesnt factor that in when looking at his shot differential last year isnt being fair to a guy.
The draft is always a gamble. Most years, even talented scounts wont land anything as valuble as a top four d man with all their picks combined. Or, maybe you get Gaudreau in the fourth round. Who can say who wins at this point.
