Oof I’m really hoping we don’t take this uptick in form as a thought that we’re back to being Cup contenders. Gotta let some of these guys go rather than he stuck in the same loop for even longer (fully on team half rebuild or something idk)

If he can be dealt with an extension in place that would be ideal. We should get a really good return for him

Have no real issue with that for a top pairing 26 year old defenceman who logs 20+ and skates faster than anyone in the league. Better chance he gets better before getting worse, and even the back end of that contract wouldn’t be that bad.
And needless to say, I’d take this today, tomorrow and a few years from now as opposed to what you get in the UFA market for that price.
And on top of that the return for him is likely a late first and another small asset. You’re not replacing Hanafin with a late first unless you strike gold.

I don’t care how or where he gets dealt. Just get great value.

So a sign and trade? I get the tempting offer for that 8 year extension that teams would like that locked in but yikes 7.5 aav bit too high for my liking

Out of Calgary’s upcoming UFA’s Hanifin or Big Z make the most sense to sign.
Hanifin is a 26 year old D that is a top pairing player with remarkable speed, with still plenty of upside. He also has experience quarter backing the PP.
Big Z is a fairly young D that is in my opinion undervalued for what he brings. He can be a 2nd D for a cheap price.
Lindholm makes sense to part ways with. He is a really good 2 way center but he struggles to consistently drive a line on his own. I think Zary could take his place as 1C on a retooled Flames.
Tanev is a fucking warrior that anchors defensive pairs with possibly the best positioning in the league and is a great mentor to the young kids, but he is 33 and can still demand a hefty cap hit. His all on the line warrior attitude also has the draw back of getting injured a lot. Honestly I would love to see him in player development.
I don’t think we can sell all our defense free agents as I don’t think we currently have enough prospects to back fill.
This is not factoring in player desire to stay, that obviously changes things. It is also not factoring in trade offers. This is just considering player ability and potential cap hit.
For the record I like all of these players and would be sad to see any of them leave.

I mean sure. I imagine the acquiring team would want to talk to him about an extension first. I would be shocked if Calgary didn’t allow it. I doubt Boston has the cap space for him but I think Dallas is going to be all over Hanifin. He would be a pretty nice upgrade over Suter on the top pair. I just hope that a lot of teams are in on him to drive up the price, I would love to get a prospect like Bourque in return.
