John Hynes Already Emphasizing Speed over Grit #minnesotawild #mnwild #kirillkaprizov #nhl

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we take a deeper look into the ways that John Hynes has moved on from Grit and moved toward Speed as a team mantra. We discuss how the Wild can play fast, even if they don’t have an abundance of speed. We talk about Hynes emphasizing speed, and how it will benefit players such as Connor Dewar, Brandon Duhaime and Kirill Kaprizov. We also talk about how speed can translate to decision makin as well, and Hynes emphasizing a style that puts offense first to take pressure off the defense. We look at the parallels in what happened in Vancouver with firing Bruce Boudreau and hiring Rick Tocchet. We look at the areas that Tocchet emphasized and how it propelled the Canucks to second in the Pacific Division so far this year!

  1. Watching last night, they were clearly a different team out there. They worked fast on offense and were aggressive in all three phases. Only nitpick is cleaning up penalties, but that is what every team deals with at some point.

  2. Loved how The new coach played the 4th line on a regular basis last night! And led the game off with the top line! Glad Dean is gone!

  3. My thoughts for today
In order to keep lettire and get mermis
Back up here, I have a solution
Billy I know you read these comments
    So here goes
Trade Merrill to San Jose give them back the fifth round pick you got from them, that will save two million
Enough to keep Vinny up here and bring up mermis
Our fourth line is special, let's keep it together

  4. I'm with you on the Brandon Duhaime fan club. The guy just never says quit. I think he was the victim in getting a couple bad penalties trying to make up for the coaster brigade. I would take the Deweys and Shaw any time over the guys that got soft and really quit on Dean! I think Littieri is more hard working than skill too but the guy flat out plays hard!

Still trying to figure out what Bogosian is supposed to be addibg. Seems slow and out of position. So if he has a higher speed I hope Bynes kicks it into gear. Maybe Moose can make something of this season now tgat Freddy finally broke the ice. He needs to give Marcus Johansson a workover…his MOJO is gone!

Note on speed: You can pass a hell ofa lot faster than you can skate!

  5. Here's the problem Billy has locked the wild into grit first with those 4 extensions. Billy himself seems to.like this grit style of play and the only way Billy changes that perception is to rid themselves of these types of players. According to Nashville this new guy doesn't play young talent, it's also been said he's ruined or hampered their young talent by relying on older players. For me hockey as a whole needs to step up with the times and rely on their youth. Football, basketball, and to some degree baseball does it but for some reason hockey is married to earn your play philosophies. This is why I liken wild hockey to gopher football, they're both stuck on their in the past rigid systems. With wild it's grit with gopher football it's RTB (aka…stuck on stupid). If Billy decides to make moves with these older players and brings up the youth, I'll change my tune. This nonsense about cap restrictions is nonsense, as a GM he should figure it out which is why he's GM.

  6. Biggest takeaway from today's episode is accountability. Let's hope Hynsey can evelate that to its proper level, and the players respond effectively.

    We shall see ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh…and we dont root for Vancouver…at least fans that experienced the entirety of the North West Division dont ๐Ÿ˜… im rooting for the guys over there though, Boeser and company. But the Nucks as a franchise can crash and burn for all I care lol

Excellent comparisons though Seth! Just had to vent that for a quick minute haha

  7. Team speed over grit is the right direction to take the club as today's version of the NHL is about speed, creating space, and finishing. Having said that I also believe you need to be able to do something with that speed. I like our 4th line well enough but know this, there's a reason 4th liners are 4th liners, they cant score. I am ok elevating their minites if they are playing well but I wouldnt use the 4th line in any situations other than what the 4th liners are out there to do……..
    Enjoy the tilt tonight

  8. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Extremely happy with the direction Hynes is articulating: speed, not just as in skating fast, but an identity that emphasizes making quick decisions, timing, reading and reacting quickly. Seems like BG with his talk, trade deadline adds, and contracts prioritized a veteran presence and wanted to get bigger (Deslauriers, Reaves, Maroon, Beghosian…) over anything else.

  9. Iโ€™m excited about Thursdayโ€™s game. I want to see this team playing to their strengths and potential. Win or lose each player adding whatever they can bring. I believe as more skilled players are added the next few years speed and skill will serve the team well.
