this is a better trade for Vancouver than Toronto . Hate to say it ….but Zadorov wouldn't make much of a difference for Toronto . Toronto needs a 1-2 top defensive player …which Zadorov isnt . For Vancouver he can play 2nd pair or split Hughes and Hronek up they need to .

As a flames fan i cant say that i like this trade but on the other hand i can sort of understand what Conroy was thinking.
Just assume that at the end of this season, Zadorov is gone from Vancouver. The flames are left with 2 picks and have cleared $4 million off the cap space.
Maybe that is ok, all things considered? I dunno,,,, it is not too thrilling though.
Pre-Cap, Zadorov would have been a sign and trade and got Calgary probably a 1st round pick at least. I'm actually surprised they traded within the division. There must have been someone else offering a 3rd and a 5th at least, but maybe the fact that everyone know Nikita wanted out lowered his value that much. Sure, he's a pure rental, but we've seen 4-5 defensemen like him even with big flaws in their game fetching a much bigger return than that, especially one who is 6'6, is physical, can skate well for his size and box out. Foote and Gonchar can work on consistency with him. I like the trade for Vancouver, but even with the current cap conditions, I'm surprised he went for so little. Here's hoping he wants to stay in Vancouver.

Tre made a handful of bad signings before he bailed. No way was Calgary going to send him a Christmas Gift. The surprise to me was the return but that has more to do with the salary cap limitations making any trade difficult. Only question now is who does Calgary move next? Take the picks and the prospects. Takes time for those massive contracts to wash off the books.
Calgary also clears cap space to take 1 year contracts that others do not want at the trade deadline for picks and prospects.
Toronto would have wanted Calgary to take half the cap and take a player that the Flames wouldn't want.
You knew Dan Milstein wouldn't let one of his prodigy's go anywhere else but Vancouver plus Dan did say the Canucks were very high on Nikita's list of teams he wanted to be traded to

Surely, the GM of the Flames wants a new job. They traded a physical defenseman to a team in their own division. For less than other teams outside of their conference were offering. So in otherwords they have to face him more than two times this year and your team is weaker because of this trade.
