Not excusing a poor showing by Kochetkov but, this really was a major reason the islanders got their goals.

They were able to feed pucks in front and their shots from the outside got in uncontested.

Our players do not block enough shots and it then puts all the pressure onto the goaltender to make the save on the shots that get through.

We also again lost the faceoff battle when that was a key strength for us in years past. If we can’t win the majority of faceoffs and the other team is out blocking 30+ attempts then we aren’t gonna find success.

I feel like the way we try to block shots is not in line with our goalies either. Our guys lay on the ice, this means the player has to lift the puck. I’ve seen Raanta and PK both hunker down instead of standing up for the higher shots and that’s how we keep getting those over-the -shoulder goals scored on us.

Just something I observed, and seems weird. It has happened so often in the past year that when I see one of our guys go seal mode I’m like..whelp..there’s a goal.

Couldnt this at least be partially be explained by the disparity in shots?

I agree, but I’ve also realized that teams always tend to get a ton of blocks against us since we take so many low quality shots

  5. The ratio of shots on goal to blocked shots are about the same for both teams. I’d rather be the team that blocks 10 and allows 16 shots on goal than the team that blocks 30 and allows 43 shots on goal. If anything, this graphic speaks to the canes absolute dominance in possession and shooting. Goaltending was the problem tonight and has been the main reason they aren’t a top team this season.
