Ohgren over Snuggerud and Stramel over Perreault are going to haunt us.
Stramel’s looking like a case of really questionable draft logic. I know he’s big and nasty but if he’s not good enough to even make it to the NHL, what’s it matter? Rasmus Kumpulainen was taken a round later, has a lot of the same projected strengths as Stramel, is nearly the same size, and is producing in the OHL.

Clearly guys like Stramel can be found outside the first round. Why not wait?
USA shortsighted again. Dude is finally healthy and playing well and they don’t consider him because of points. Though that applies to people here too. Oh well, some patience with this player will pay off greatly for the Wild.

Some times I get tired of all this crystal ball shit.
This kid is not looking like a good pick rn. I know everyone said small sample size at the draft, but he’s played more games now and he still hasn’t popped. Hopefully he’s just a late bloomer but he needs to bloom soon if he wants to make the show. I’m rooting for the kid.
Last time we talked about stramel people told me I was jumping to conclusions saying that this one didn’t look good. Now it appears people have shifted gears. Either way this is just another negative stop in his development

too early to be worried, it’s a long list of great, even elite players, that don’t make the World Juniors. Logan Couture, Kyle Connor, Alex Tuch, etc. He already played in 2 and has been hurt this year and isn’t playing top 6 minutes, so I don’t expect him to put up numbers yet.

Stramel is going to be a stud! But I suppose we can temper our expectations for now. No need to get bent out of shape on this one, boys!
All of Guerin’s supporters will rush to defend him with this and other picks. Sorry, but right now it is an awful pick and if they were to redraft, Stramel may not be taken with the 1st 50 picks. Between NMC extensions and questionable draft picks, I really wonder what this team will be like 2 years from now after cap hell. As pointed out by a few people (including Russo), Guerin is emotional and reactionary and that is not a quality that bodes well for being a GM.
Wish i could fast forward 5 years just for a moment to see what happens with Gabe Perrault bc so many ppl here are calling that a hit for the Rangers based on not much besides the fact he continues to get points playing with Ryan Leonard and Will Smith.
I feel like this season’s rocky start has turned all of our brains into mush.
I get that I’m reading comments on the internet, but yikes – we don’t have to polarize every single issue, right? For this:
1. It’s possible to acknowledge that a proper evaluation of Stramel still isn’t quite there. He’s dealt with injuries for a chunk of this season. He’ll certainly be far better than what he’s shown so far.
2. He’s not anywhere close to a Johansson pick. Look, he was widely regarded as a late 1st round selection, even despite his freshman collegiate difficulties. Johannson, meanwhile, was a multiple-round in advance reach.
3. We want to imagine that 1st round picks are a sure thing, but the statistical ‘truth’ is that unless it’s a top 5 selection, the odds of prolonged NHL success drop precipitously (2/3rd chance in late first; 1/3 chance in the 2nd round). This all being said, last year’s draft was unbelievably deep, and the kind of draft that good teams are going to build a foundation around (see: Bedard & Moore for Chicago. fuu——). THIS is the kind of draft we can’t miss on, especially frustrating when we left Richie and Perrault on the board. Right now, this pick doesn’t look good, but it’s hard to completely write off this pick when Stramel’s first year was on an offensively challenged Badger team, and then he started this year injured.
I think we all whipped ourselves into a ‘Guerin/Bracket’ hysteria and therefore demanded perfection of them, and this year we WAY over-reacted in our swing to being hyper-critical.
Guys, we are still in really good hands. 2020: Rossi, Khusnutdinov, O’Rourke, Hunt, Pavel Novak. That’s a top 6 center, a middle 6 center (or winger?), two lower-pair D, and a guy whose development got derailed by a cancer diagnosis. That’s an amazing draft.
2021: Wallstedt, Lambos, Peart, Bankier, and others. There’s a franchise goalie, and at least another defenseman who should also see significant NHL time.
2022: Ohgren, Yurov, Haight, others. I’ve followed Ohgren and Yurov a little more closely, these guys are legitimate. Yurov is gonna pop off, I think he’s a bone fide top line winger, and Ohgren is going to be an excellent middle six winger that plays a strong 2-way game.
2023: Stramel, Kumpulainen, Heidt, others. our 2 second round picks are about as good as can be asked, based on what we are currently seeing.
Maybe this all goes to shit, but I’m still extremely optimistic with the prospect cupboards we’ve been stocking. The back half of this decade is going to be AWESOME as a MN Wild fan.
How dare we question Bill Guerin. He signed Foligno for $4million a year for the next 4 years. Meanwhile the fools in Winnipeg signed Niederreiter to a laughable $4million for the next 3 years. Surely Foligno has more talent than Niederreiter. Plus Foligno is a year older so he has more experience.
