The McLeod 2.0 is working, no more circles. Stu looks comfortable and focused on rebound control. The System is working and Hyman looks like the old Hyman! This brand of hockey keeps all 4 lines involved also liked how Kris gives everyone a chance! Every game is important from here on in, just need the big guys to stay healthy! Now we can trade from a position of strength with Broberg wondering on Holloways return?
I hope they never go back to the 11 and 7 format. Having set lines gets all the players involved, they’re not overworking 97 and 29, and the linemates get to know each other’s tendencies. Excellent 60 minutes of work tonight. Thanks Patrick. 👍
Just glad to see Skinner feeling his ability to bail his defense out when they need him to. Wild up next will be a test as they are on a run as well. Funny, Phoenix has won their last 5 as well (in 7th).
Long post follows with base game statistics including some for the Carolina Hurricanes. Read, don't read, up to you. These are BASE stats not detailed ones provided to give a foundation (takes 3 sites to do it). My comments and observations at the end.
Statistics for Carolina Hurricanes at Edmonton Oilers December 6th, 2023
Edmonton Oilers:
McLeod 1 Goal
Ekholm 1 Goal (GWG)
Hyman 3 Goals (3rd Career Hattie)
Foegele 1 Goal, 1 Primary Assist
Janmark 2 Primary Assists, 1 Secondary Assist
McDavid 2 Primary Assists, 1 Secondary Assist
Bouchard 2 Secondary Assists
Nuge 1 Primary Assist
Skinner 39 Saves on 40 Shots = .975 Save %age (nearly had another shutout but a 3-1 by Carolina killed that)
Carolina Hurricanes:
Staal Goal
Slavin Primary Assist
Kochetkov 3 Saves on 6 Shots = .500 Save %age, pulled after 6 minutes (and letting in 3)
Raanta 25 Saves on 28 Shots = .893 Save %age played 54 minutes in relief
So Coach puts the 3rd line to start and they get a goal in 28 seconds. DEPTH SCORING. Next up 13 seconds later a goal by Ekholm (Defensive Scoring). Things settle down (slightly) because Carolina looks like the got Flash Bang grenaded early on. Hyman scores next (just under 6 minutes) with assists by Janmark (DEPTH) and Bouch (who just keeps getting points as he assisted on Ekholm's goal too). It was the first of Hyman's three goals (HATTIE, 3rd of his career and ALL of those with the Oilers). Less than 9 minutes later (after a goalie change by Carolina) he wanted to welcome Raanta to the slaughter by scoring his 2nd on the night.
Second period, thought you were done with Depth scoring, nope, Foegele says HI on a great rush (and he actually FINISHED it) assist to Janmark (who had 3 on the night).
Third period defensive gaff and the Canes get a 3 on 1 and Staal buries it past Skinner to wreck his shutout bid, assist to Slavin. That was IT for the Canes who normally dominate the Oilers (I mean prior to this game they owned us 7 games to 1). Finally Connor sets up Hyman to get the hattie about 1/2 way through the 3rd and that was it folks. PK at 100% (and the Oilers took only 2 penalties though the Canes only took 1 over 1/2 way in the 3rd and I think the Oilers were happier keeping the lead and not giving up a chance than scoring). Oilers were slightly better in the circle, had more giveaways (dumps mostly), more takeaways and 10 more blocked shots. Carolina had a little more hits than the Oilers who were really keeping it clean. I couldn't watch or listen to this game (medical stuff this morning early) just going by stats and the highlights but it looked like a GREAT game to be at. Take care all.

They smoked the canes !
Better to slump at the beginning of the season than in midseason in my opinion

Skinner needs to stay in his net , absolute garbage when he tries to play the puck !
