  1. Goalies are fine, struggling some but they have no help from defense. Been saying it for years now, all offensive roster, no physicality outside svech and Chatfield. That's why they get man handled in playoffs. And they score by committee no out right game changer.

  2. Based on the Save Percentages and seeing some of those +- numbers, i think goaltending is the BIGGEST issue. Someone needs to be shipped out and they need to sign someone like Halak if heā€™s still available. Worse comes to worse, Halak doesnā€™t change anything then you re-evaluate. Needs to be done sooner rather than later though

  3. Orlov is overrated, try to trade him while he has some value, off load Freddie always out Anderson. Put TDA/Slavin, Skjei/Pesce, burns/Chatfield and defense will improve

  4. Power play without TDA has been the actual problem. Short handed goals have cost Carolina several points. That is before you get into situational considerations such as finally getting a power play goal on Vancouver's 5th penalty to make the score 2-3 is WAY different than missing the chance to end that 1st period leading 2-1 by scoring on the 5v3 and again with the subsequent 5v4.

  5. The Canes have to go on a long road trip to start every year due to the NC State Fair being held pretty much across the street.

  6. As a Hurricanes fan, I am just baffled. I know this group is capable of so much more, and we've even seen stretches of it in previous seasons. I don't have the answer and I do not envy Coach Rod for having to try to find the answer. I do not believe our head coach is the issue, let me be very clear on that.

  7. Necas has been phoning it in all season. Needs to get traded or start playing like this is his job and he wants to be here.

  8. Necas should have been gone two years ago. The only time he is any good is in overtime when he has open ice to skate. His puck management is awful, he doesn't even try to win board battles and as you saw last night he cannot defend anyone in front of the net. I cringe everytime he has the puck because I know he's going to try and be cute and make some soft ass weak behind the back bullshit pass giving the other team a scoring chance

  9. They should certainly take stabs at Carter Hart or Juuse Saros at the deadline. Ppl keep saying it's their offence that's not quite there yet but both the starters and backup being below .900% is an glaring issue. A top 6 of

    Svechnikov-Aho-Teravainen
    Bunting-Staal-Necas

isn't the worst. Could they use a superstar forward? Yes. Though that's the lesser of their problems atm.

  10. As a Carolina hurricane and Atlanta Braves fan, Iā€™ve learned the last couple years that the regular season is meaningless. Just make it to the playoffs and anything can happen.

  11. Rod had a single new idea six years ago.
Now, every other coach in the league knows exactly what to expect from him. And as his plan meets with less and less success, he has never once adapted. Either that has to change, or the coach has to change.
A huge problem is the Hurricanes' overuse of the boards instead of making tape-to-tape passes. Because Canes players are constantly along the boards in the offensive zone, every shot either comes from the blue line, or from a horrible angle far outside of the dots. They're easy to block and easy for the goalie to see coming. And every other team knows that they can just go straight to the boards to cut off the pass and steal the puck. This is happening more and more often shortly after a dump-in, just throwing away puck possession, and there has been no change to address it.
Fast, creative players like Aho and Necas should be trying to find opportunities to go on offensive rushes — but instead, they're relegated to puck retrieval duty. Their skills are wasted in service of this endless dump-and-chase system, all just to generate more low-percentsge shots from the blue line that are probably going to get blocked anyway.

Defensively, the team honestly just seems to be suffering from inattentiveness. Slavin has seemed not quite like himself this season, and Orlov remains a defensive non-option. But the team — especially the offensive players coming back to help — really just seemed like they need to focus.

As for goaltending, so many people seem to forget that the team's starting goalie is out indefinitely with a case of sudden """unexplained""" blood clots. Kochetkov's not ready yet, and Raanta is close to needing to retire.

  12. As a total outsider, 2;things perplexed me about the Canes' off-season:
    1. Rolling back the goalie trio
    2. The Orlov signing

they look like a team that no longer has an identity right now

  13. On this road trip so far (4 games)

    Aho – 0 points
    Jarvis – 0 points
    Turbo – 0 points
KK – 0 points (no points in 6 games)

At some point your offensive players gotta put the puck in the net. This is not a new problem. This has happened in years past, where our top offensive players go sleepy for long periods of time. They all seem to disappear at the same time. The defense and goaltending was there to bail them out. Not this year.

PP is still a problem and has been for years. We have allowed 7 SHGs this year. Terrible. Sloppy passing, drop passes to no one, lazy defense, terrible shot selection and placement.

I was expecting some roster changes this summer and was surprised by our moves. Sign TDA and an $8M defenseman to put him on the third pairing? Resign the same injury prone goalie tandem. Freddy was great last year during the playoffs but did not expect to run back the same tandem.

Iā€™m not sure if it is a player or system issue, maybe itā€™s a combination of both?

  14. Necas has to be traded away ASAP and they need to stop thinking Brent Burns can QB a PP and play 25+ minutes a night. Gotta put DeAngelo in that role with Slavin again since itā€™s worked fine in the past.

  15. Raanta is a stray dog who skates all over the ice and plays out of the crease instead of doing his job, which is sealing off the net. He gets scored on within 10 seconds every time he nonchalantly plays pucks off the backboard. Kochetkov has some goofy moments too, but Raanta is a bonafide blooper reel. I have watched games where one can see the frustration and demoralized expressions on the offense due to undisciplined and ineffective goaltending. BTW, Andersen has the same tendencies when he plays too. Way too far from the net, allowing far too many ricochets, wrap-arounds, second chance goals to get in. As I mentioned in another post, these guys are giving opponents a soccer-sized net to shoot at. It's not hard to score when a goalie gives you 20 square meters of air behind him to exploit…If the Canes don't find a goalie from the Luongo School, and soon, their season is done, and it would be a damn shame considering the talent they have…And just a side thought. They really should get rid of those stupid wordmark jerseys, and just go with either the semaphores or the frisbees… šŸ˜

  16. My number one thing this season that's been super blatant, is the decision making has been God aweful, open net where you should clearly shoot that's a pass somehow now. Facing a goaltender down on a 3 on 1 and there's no net available and should be a pass is a shot for some reason. They need to work on their desicions as a team and focus on what they know and not be too fancy and they'll be back to normal. Hopefully….

  17. October is always rough. The State Fair Road Trip is always a killer. The saving grace is there are 30 home games to take them through to the end of the season. Canes play well at home.

  18. carolina has the best puck moving defensman on the team being scratched every game. What can i say)))

  19. I think that theres issues all across the team right now, but I would definitely say that decision making in general is the most frustrating thing for me. They will play very hard, good effort hockey, put will pass often when they should shoot and shoot when they should pass, and then they do one dumb thing, leading to a high danger scoring chance, and the goal tending isnt good enough to compensate for the mistakes. Just look at all the shorthanded goals against. One dumb decision on the power play, and its in the back of our net.
To name just a few guys,
I am tired of watching burns shoot the puck and hit a body two feet in front of him, leading to an odd man rush or a defensive zone clear. I am tired of necas powering into the zone by himself, turning the puck over, and then proceeding to spectate in the d zone, leaving someone wide open. I am tired of seeing aho pass the puck when he has a good shooting opportunity, and then the puck is intercepted.
These guys are supposed to be among our best guys, and its just not there right now.

  20. I said before the season, the 'Canes had to improve the goaltending. Anderson canjot stay healthy, and both him and Raanta are in their mid 30's. They should have traded Kochetkov and Pesce, for Hellebucyk. Just because Anderson and Raanta were well liked, doesn't account for wins, or gerting thecteam to the Cup Finals. Giving up an avg of 6 goals a game on the road is a SERIOUS problem. You would think with 3 goaltenders, that one would grasp the reins.
Then there's Deangelo. That was a huge mistake by Waddell. The defense was a major strong point already, so why bring him back?

Svetnikov is either still skating on eggshells after his injury, or he is not driving to the net enough. With his scoring ability, he needs to cruise the slot more, and put the luck in the net. The 'Canes have to start tightening up. These egregious hone/ road splits are a sign if a lack of effort. These road trips have happened before, and they always have one at the beginning of every sesson, with the state fair in town. They need a longgg practice, to get this malaise out of their system, before they fall too far back.

  21. as a canes fan, we need a new goalie on the trade market, not sure who. scoring has been bad as well, not happy rn tbh seems like this year may be a waste

  22. Don made a huge mistake imo by not acquiring a goal scorer this past offseason. Goaltending is without a doubt the biggest issue with the team though.

  23. From 1/6 to 2/10 the canes have 1 road game and 11 home games. Iā€™d imagine that stretch is the last chance for them to get it right before they enter maximum panic mode

  24. Carolina, like about 25 teams in the league needs a better goalie. There seems to be less and less of the dominant goalies in the league nowadays.

  25. Canes front office had a trade deadline and 10 million to improve the offense and shore up other areas. They did nearly nothing.
Shayne Gostisbehere was the only move of significance. They should have re-signed him. Nope. They had to try to reinvent the wheel at D. They weakened their D by getting Orlov.

The goaltending problem isn't solely on the goalies, I'll just say that.

  26. I think you are overstating the value other teams would be in DeAngelo and what the Canes may have to settle for is something like a very low draft pick. Yes, he has offensive talent, but his defensive weaknesses are such that a very strong defensive partner is needed. How many teams in the trade market have that and would be willing to take the chance on a player who has flamed out in New York, Philadelphia and now Carolina?

  27. As a Capitals fan, I think an Orlov for Kuznetsov trade would be good for both teams. Orlov has been a big disappointment in Carolina so far. Maybe a change of scenery would help both players. Both players have very negative trade value right now because they have large contracts and they've been horrible.

  28. Canes fan here. I think they have too many defensemen and their additions/ returns have not worked out. Up front Svech hasnā€™t returned fully from his injury. The goaltending has bunch much worse than anyone has thought. One thing i have noticed is Drury is playing well. The effort hasnā€™t been there for about a handful of guys every night. I think if they had an AHL team you could sit 3 guys for a night and replace them with call ups. That would get their attention. Something has to change and I donā€™t know which goalie out there they could get but they are going to have to give a D and a young forward to bring someone in to help

  29. I donā€™t think we just bounce back after this. I think there worst game was Vasilevskyā€™s return game and that was East Coast and Iā€™m pretty sure that was a home game, and we just got pantsā€™d. And the rest of the division wont make it easy on us either.

  30. Goalies are a problem for some reasons.
I get how Kochetkov can be a problem. He's young and new, maybe teams figured him out and he failed to adjust.
Raanta… I mean, he must be playing injured, right?

  31. Thanks for the Canes content as well as the rest. Dunno why we rolled out the same goalies again hut sadly we did. DeAngelo was always a wasted move and they need to fix that immediately. I love the core but honestly i think 1 should go just to shake things up and its probably (scheme-fit-wise) Necas. Love my team but it feels like every year is the same at this point
