It's not a terrible hit. Brodin knew Kane was coming, he turned and saw him 2 seconds before hand, yet BRODIN STOPPED RIGHT BEFORE THE BOARDS!. if brodin continues in the direction he was going , towards the right this doesn't happen. He knew knew Kane was coming and he decided to slam on his brakes and turn his back. Why did he slam on his brakes? He should have continued skating. It was an unfortunate hit, I hate Kane, but this was clean. Players need to take accountability and not slam on their brakes . There is a reason why a repeat offender like Kane didn't get suspended. It was unfortunate but clean.
Kane is one of those players that no matter what team he is on, he is a highly skilled BUT a dirty player. To bad his coaches and mentors couldn't convince him during his career from the juniors up that Respect doesn't come from dirty hits, it comes from great hockey plays. He has the skills, too bad he thinks he's a bad ass and deals dirt several times a season.
Biased oilers fan here. What would the penalty call be ? Brodin is too close to the boards to call it a boarding, isn't he ? Charging ? Cross-checking, cause Evander's right arm was abit high ?
Brodin needs to protect himself better. He acts like he all the time in the world. Brace yourself to get hit when you are at the boards, you have to realize, who is on the ice on the other team…
Okay, it seems it's hard for people to understand the rules. The two things refs are looking at in these situations are "awareness" and whether a player can "defend themselves".
On the Kane hit, Brodin is fully aware Kane is coming from behind. He has time to prepare for the hit while collecting the puck. He decides not to prepare and gets drilled face first, but the hit is close enough to the boards so it is not boarding, but a normal hit.
Now you might ask why does the person who gets hit have some responsibility in these situations? It is because if the rules weren't written like this, defencemen could always just turn their backs on the attacker while they pick up the puck and they could clear the puck at peace knowing they can't be hit. It is the same mentality with players who look at the puck while crossing the neutral zone. It is on you if you keep your head down and get drilled at the center ice because otherwise you could defend yourself from being hit by just keeping your head down.
Once its the numbers its a call, but the league has got to teach these young fucks how to take a hit…its bedlam out there with these guys getting blindsided because they leave themselves vulnerable and wonder how it could happen or why the hitter would do that…learn to play the damn game

Oilers fans can’t be impartial here, definitely a penalty at minimum

Brodin is going to miss at least a month
Kane is still an idiot. I wonder if that clown is still in bankruptcy?

5 minute major, no games. Not the worst hit but from behind.
Brian Burke figured this out a long time ago…bear hug. Grab the player, hold him up, take him into the boards.
No holding, nk roughing, it's all good.
