The Toronto Maple Leafs almost pulled off the unthinkable trailing 5-0 down in the third period but lost in overtime to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti go over the craziness from the game and what they thought of Ilya Samsonov’s shaky night in net. Mike and Dave go over Ryan Reaves’ injury and the players’ comments after the game and why some of them didn’t sit well for them. Leafs need a 1 Goalie ❤

Usually a lawsy D core and/or a team that refuses to play any defense provide cover for the goaltending. However, this loss is totally on Samsonov. Those goals allowed in the 2nd were brutal to put it mildly. One of his worst games as a Leaf. I'm now questioning his mental strength and IQ level. Everyone thought Caps were nuts to just cut him loose, but now you can see why they did it. Unless he gets his sht together, I don't see him in a Leaf uniform for much longer.

You guys, along with tsn soortsnet and sdpn, seem to think sammy plays better if the net is his. Maybe this is finally proof it's the opposite?
His first year with Washington, he is battling for a spot, so was good.
Second year , washington trades their goalie and samsonov stinks.
Third year Washington gets a good goalie for tandem and samsonov does a bit better.
Toronto year 1 he is competing with murray.l, and does well.
Year two woll is his partner and has only played 10 or so games. The beginning of thebyesr samsonov views the net as his and stinks. Woll then steals the net and samsonov starts playing better. Woll is now injured and he is the clear number 1, and stinks again.
There is a fairly large number of games to show my logic. I think if he is the clear number one, and he isn't competing for his spot, he underperforms. It seems samsonov needs that internal competition to keep his fire stoked.
Don't forget samsonov mite be worrying about woll injury and his mad about that so maybe it affect his playing ability so give the guy another chance when they play Pittsburgh on Saturday you never know and like I said Jones is the backup until woll comes back to the line up😅
Said I'm not satisfied I'm not putting the w on the board but give them a break you know every night every day that close by they try their best and yeah Columbus did take a five of need through the first and second. But at least they came back and yeah they they hung their boil to dry but I still think Samsonov still a good goalie

The couch knows best if samsonov is his #1 so like said Jones is # 2 for now but we know that when woll gets better soon and that he will bring some good wins for the club because they made woll #1 samsonov#2 then Jones#3
There is no silver lining to this game. They didn't show up for the first two periods. I would be happier if they had lost 10-0. That might have been a wakeup call for these clowns. As it is they are running around patting themselves on the back at their big "comeback."
Poor defensive plays, giveaways and the elephant in the room. The coach who is OK with that sort of play. "OK" might be the wrong word. "Rewards" that sort of play. Yes, "rewards" is a much better word.
Bad line changes. Who is responsible for holding the players accountable for that? The Leafs are easily the worst in the League at something 10 year-olds can be taught to do properly.
I am fine with them leaving Samsonov in. Let him play through it like everyone else.
Start Jones in Pittsburg. Start Samsonov. How about they start benching forwards who don't backcheck or who have brutal turnovers in their own end.
Matthews has said the same thing that Willy did many times and he gets a pass for it. As the highest paid player shouldn't he be the one that is held to the highest standard?
The Penguins are Dubas's philosophy without Matthews and Marner to make it look halfway acceptable.
Hey guys I have meet samsonov in person i know that he just had a new baby and is a dad so he's the fault give him another chance on Saturday against Pittsburgh and see if he can redeem himself okay guys there's just no question about it the coach knows what to do maybe you'll put them in or maybe he'll go to Jones like I said the leafs will take what it takes to win hockey games but tonight wasn't their best come back game I think they will over come this game tonight losing 6 _5 to Columbus and bounce back against the Pittsburgh penguins maybe say 5 _0 we will see on Saturday go leave go good night leafs Nation

You enter the game with a mentality of going out and playing a solid complete game. You enter the 3rd with a mentality of go win a period. You play an entirely different style of hockey entering a period when you know it has to be all offense. Translate Willy's comments to read 'we know it's not impossible for us to score 5'.
You make a take on a notion that the team went into that period believing they were going to come back. They didn't plain and simple.

When a goalie starts letting in goals from behind the net he is done, look at Campbell the same thing happened now hes in the ahl, over Sammy in net this isnt house league let him find his game in the AHL.

It was a weird game. Move on. What bothers me is Mitch got hammered into the boards from behind with a suspension worthy hit and as usual nobody did a damn thing about it. Their 2nd best player has no protection. Do that to Kucherov, McDavid or many other stars and see what happens. That's why I want Keefe gone. I don't care if their down 2 or up 2 that has to be addressed.
