KANE, COPP, & DETROIT’S DECEMBER DOLDRUMS – Winged Wheel Podcast – Dec. 17th, 2023

Get your tickets to WWP Night with the Grand Rapids Griffins!: https://griffinshockey.com/wwp

The Detroit Red Wings and December – name a worse duo.

Tune in as Ryan & Evan recap two dull losses for Detroit, including a Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 L that was Husso’s best giveaway with the winning goal coming off his mistake (and a Michael Rasmussen rip), and the Philadelphia Flyers 1-0 stinker where Lyon left hurt and DeBrincat, Kane, Raymond, Seider, Gostisbehere, & any other offense were flat (6:40). We discuss whether Kane or any other specific player is to blame, how likely playoffs are in Hockeytown now, & more (14:35).

Also, an update on Perron’s suspension situation (22:55) before a conversation about Jonatan Berggren being sent down & how it compares to Edvinsson (24:35), how injuries to Larkin, Compher, Kostin, & others compare to Decembers of years past for Yzerman’s squad (28:35), and Andrew Copp: the newest Red Wings scapegoat (33:50)? Also a quick note on Trey Augustine in the World Juniors and Derek Lalonde’s squad being on top of TNT viewership ratings (39:50).

After that, NHL news including Connor McDavid’s return to form, Trouba, Frederic, Gudbranson, Cousins, & “The Hockey Code”, Kyrou being boo’d in St. Louis, Raanta being waived, & lots more (44:40) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:00:00) – enjoy!

  1. 2 goals in the last 30 days for Debrincat, Kane -7 in 6 games and only 2 points. Hopefully they get their shit together.

  2. I was thinking maybe Kostin's flu wasn't confined only to him and maybe a bunch of the team is under the weather. Combine that with three top six players out and perhaps that explains some of the lackluster play? But yes. Cat is definitely invisible right now. And too many of the guys seem to be deferring to Kane, too, instead of taking obvious shots.

  3. Signing Kane went against the defensive systems ethos. The Wings showed they could score without him. Bad move by Stevie IMHO. Lean on GR as temporary replacements for injuries (assuming contracts allow). We have good players there to come up for a few games.

  4. The last two games were just bad matchups. Last season they scored 4 goals in 3 games vs Carolina and 2 goals in 3 games vs Philadelphia. Injuries or not, they probably weren’t going to do well in these games anyway. Wild stat #1. The Red Wings are now 2-16-2 in the regular season at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wild stat #2. Since December of 2016 the Red Wings are 5-13-6 against John Tortorella coached teams (Columbus: 2016-17 to 2021 and Philadelphia: 2022-23 to now). Clearly any Tortorella style hockey is a bad match up. I’m not concerned. Before the last 2 games they scored 3 goals against a really good Dallas team and 6 on the second half of a back to back in St. Louis. I’ll start being concerned if they lay an egg against an Anaheim team on the second half of a back to back with their back up goalie in net.

  5. They're still in it but really need Larkin to get back in and be like 75 per cent healthy. If not, this is another lost season.

  6. The main asset Berggren brings, which I think people don't appreciate, is not the goals or the nifty passing. Although those are important. But rather his pacing and how he is able to help build momentum when he has the the puck and allow his team mates to find positioning on the ice. The last game is a prime example, where it largely felt like the players were trying to take short cuts by too complicated passes, unsuccessfully forcing plays and didn't allow for the pacing to build appropriately. Hence it felt disjointed and chaotic. You need size, speed and grit in a team. But you Do also need calm, poise and structure. Players like Bergy brings that.

  7. I don't understand why athletes get a special status.

You are clearly protecting some players! In real life, some would have been fired long ago because they don't perform as well as they should.

That's why some fans can relate to this situation! React upset and ask or request a trade.
E.g. he earns so much money but doesn't perform well, why is he in the company/team? etc

You have to look at the fans like shareholders. They aren't always right, but they pay everything so that everything can continue to run and make a profit.
For Red Wings fans, it equates to winning, reaching the playoffs or winning the Stanley Cup.
Sometimes you should listen to your fans.

Without fans there is no Red Wings

  8. Regarding the timeline for the appeal for Perron, the NHL goes ahead with the typical on brand response. I wouldn’t trust the NHL to watch my dog.
