I imagine weā€™re giving him some confidence reps in the A because heā€™s waiver-exempt, and seeing how Daws does on a bigger stage. Makes sense, could be good for everyone

They really seemed to be hinting to this during the broadcast if you were listening. They were talking about Dawsā€™ performance in the AHL and how Schmid was struggling. There was all that commotion that they wanted Schmid to get AHL reps in the preseason and they seem to believe that Daws has earned this.

The organization’s handling of Schmid this year has been criminal. He was finally finding his game, gets two back-to-backs in a month, doesn’t do well in the second on either of them, and gets sent to the AHL. It’s befuddling at best.

  4. Isnt really ready for the nhl full time, so let him play a lot of games in the ahl, and we get to see if daws is readyā€¦

I mean, I get it, Schmid hasn’t been as good as you’d have hoped.

Unfortunately, this team has played itself into a position where every single point is going to matter if they’re going to make the playoffs. And now we’re going to have trust a young goalie who…(deep breath)…

Hasn’t played in the NHL in two years.

Has only 25 games of NHL experience.

Is just coming off hip surgery and we know all too well about goaltenders and hips.

Has played three games anywhere in the last eight months.

  6. Seems to be a Hail Mary before over paying for 1A goalie.

  7. Schmid has been super inconsistent his entire career. Some days he looked elite and others the goals just pile up on’m. Daws has a lower ceiling but deserves this opportunity.

Sucks that we are in the stage of throwing shit at the wall hoping something sticks, but itā€™s worth shaking up the tandem right now. Just need better performances. The team can clean up its play, but we still need the goalie to be the final stop and itā€™s just not getting done. Daws was our one bright spot of goaltending two years ago, maybe he does it again. Anyone think heā€™s getting the start in Ottawa?

I know that he really came up clutch in that Rangers series, but he has some very serious flaws in his game that need to be worked on in a less stressful environment. Specifically his glove and lateral movement.

Letā€™s hope he chooses to take this as a learning opportunity and not something that defines him.

Letā€™s see what Daws has – the few games he was up he did well from what I recall

Makes sense. This is what I said we should do just 3 or 4 days ago. I love Akira. He’s still young, and was arguably better (or less bad!) than Vitek… but not by much and we still need to try get him going again like he was in the first half of 2022.

  12. Itā€™s the right move although I think heā€™s been better than Vanacek but just consistently put in situations to fail. Glad theyā€™re finally giving him a chance to reset.

No, a young goalie coming off a hip injury and who has played like 25 games in the NHL will not give us the long sought after ā€œaverageā€ goaltending.
