They never play with any urgency. Everything looks difficult for them. Passes just out of reach, poor forecheck, turnovers in the neutral zone, no hitting/checking, everybody chasing puck in defensive zone, losing puck battles along boards, no one seems to be in right place when they need to be there. They look so discombobulated. I cant explain it well…like everything is scrambled…they have no flow, everything looks so difficult for them. This is very poor hockey they are playing. Its extremely frustrating watching them. Walman is absolutely playing worst hockey. Whenever they play they dont play like they want to win. They just kinda cruise on auto pilot. I see no hussle to outwork the opponent. Yzerman needs to have a talk with this coach, Im starting to wonder about him. Still dont see much physicality or hitting/checking. They are way to soft. And I mean soft. There boys. We need men. Lalonde is soft also. There just mediocre as fuck. So sick of it the last several seasons. Just average, streaky, mediocre, boring hockey. This team is going nowhere. Even when they score 5 they find a way to lose. There toast…and kane is not the problem. No way
It's a combination of the defense being porous and the goaltending being physically incapable of bailing the team out. Walman has been useless for about the month of December and the other LD's have been somehow worse. The forwards aren't back-checking hard/smart enough so there's just no sense of synergy for a defensive unit and we wind up watching little kids soccer in our own end at least 3 times a night.
It looks like defense and goaltending, but when you have two on none breaks against you while YOU are on the powerplay, you can’t blame the goalie. It starts in the O end where the Wings can’t seem to get the loose pucks or win many board battles. Larkin hasn’t looked good since the hit. The whole team looks perfectly happy to lose. Petry, Veleno, Rasmussen, Copp and probably some others should go to GR and some of the kids should come up and take their lump/gain experience. Also, there is no MUSCLE to this team. A bunch of Eurocupcakes.
Holl and Petry have been absolutely atrocious. I think if we keep Edvinsson up so he can keep developing at the NHL level and trade for best available defenseman, it would help this team a ton. Can’t really hold it against Reimer given he’s supposed to be out 3rd goalie.
Colombus is supposedly looking to sell pieces, maybe see if they will trade us Werenski. Or since Mike wants an Italian d man go get Ferraro (not even sure if he’s Italian but still)
No muscle,team is soft,when they were great with the grind line they hit people and the other team would get 10-12 shots now its like a shooting gallery most of the game is played in Detroits end,how could the GM not see the goalie problem before the season even started,I'm glad that I can't get to watch them much online the easy goals they give up stinks,I thought with "Mo" the defense was going to be great,first year he everything now he's making mistakes nearly every game,and forgot the checking part,he ain't no kornwal
Wings have to hit on a pick beyond the 1st round. Tuomisto, Mastrosimone, Johansson, Wallinder, Niederbach, Hanas, Buium, James, Buchelnikov, Augustine, Gibson, Cleveland are the 2nd rounders under Yzerman. Eventually, you need to use the ones you still have in trade packages or you need them to hit. Patience, yes, but the drafting under Draper and Yzerman has been fine to mid at best
Players not named Kane and Debrincat need to step it up. I especially want to see better play from Mo Seider. The wheels have completely fallen off here and if they don’t rebound quickly it’s another wasted season. Idk why Yzerman didn’t trade for Zadorov if he could have been had for as cheap as a 5th rd pick. This defense is horrid and the goaltending is abysmal
Remember how bad cris Osgood was, remember tim chevldae , when we got a coach like Scotty Bowman who preached defense first that's when we became serious contenders,and eventually Stanley cup champions!!!!! Also Bowman built a stifling, suffocating defense around yzerman,we were one the best scoring teams in the nhl, but one of the worst defensive teams until Bowman changed their mindset!! Who do you think created the grind line!!! Yzerman is going to produce another one, the coach we have now doesn't know how to teach defense and yzerman will bring a coach with a Bowman type mindset, the current won't be here that much longer i guarantee!!!!
We need two "Kronwalls" stat. Case in point – Minnesota Wild game. It blew out of control 3rd period when defensive zone showed weakness and Wild just pressed. Had some hard hitting D shocked Wild it'd at least put the fear of God back in the wild instead of giving them a feeding frenzy.
I think teams have figured out how to expose our defence and coaching hasn’t adapted or made adjustments. Having our d in the high slot trying to block shots while leaving 1 or 2 opposing players in front of the net to capitalize on rebounds or tips just isn’t working. Maybe I’m totally off here but either way I don’t care, figure it out because we aren’t just losing tight games that we’re competing in we’re losing them BAD!!! Like maybe even worse than years past.
I was at the game last night, turnovers, the Wings don't seem to know where to pass in their own end, slow to react , lack of focus and losing guys leading to way too many odd man rushes and break aways, Reimer actually did ok on those , Wild could have had at least 8-9 goals last night with how many times they got behind the D .
