Nylander's work on the 1st Ottawa goal by Kelly is why he's not worth 11M. Why he uses his speed on the back-check after the turnover to go to Giroux instead of the unchecked Kelly, is why the goal happens. If he targets Kelly on the turnover, likely no goal. Instead he pursues Giroux, who Rielly already has covered. On the 1st Batherson goal, Marner skates back after yet another turnover, but inexplicably stops skating & then coasts in behind Batherson, leaving him unmolested to bang in the easy rebound. Why let up? Are you lazy? A tenacious, committed forward would not have let up until he'd caught Batherson, but Marner just stopped skating.
I defended Marner for years, but while he has generated points this year, he has been oddly careless, coupled with a lack of attention to detail & has not been as dogged on D as he has been in the past, especially in the D-zone. His line has been pinned in the D-zone far too often this season, with turnovers in their own zone from all 3 guys far too often. I know they face the toughest match-ups in most games, especially on the road, but they have to be better than what I'm seeing in their own end. Matthews, Marner, JT & Bill were -2 & Rielly -3 tonight.
