Breaking News: Maple Leafs Place Samsonov on Waivers – Sabres Comrie on Waivers

We have huge news today from the NHL waiver wire we have a pair of goalies on waivers today including Toronto Maple Leafs goalie elas Sam sonov we’ll discuss both these goalie stats the odds of getting picked up what went wrong and what the Futures might hold coming up

Next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned we have some pretty big news from the NHL waiver wire here today we have two gold Hunters on waivers including uh Eric comry in Buffalo and elas Sam sonov in Toronto before we get to Sam sonov

Which is certainly the bigger story here uh let’s just discuss comry quickly to see where things might go with him uh he signed to a one-year contract so he’ll be a pending unrestricted free agent after this year is making 1.8 million so that’s certainly it’s a lot of money for

A lot of backups around the NHL uh and certainly a backup gender who’s seen limited time but struggled during those brief appearances uh he’s appeared in seven games this this year and he’s allowed an average of just over four goals per game and he has an 863 safe

Percentage so you know he’s well below League average when it comes to save percentage which I believe is hovering around 9:05 I believe it is right now um so 863 well below um that’s a lot of percentage points allowing four goals per game as an average is not good I

Mean ultimately you’re going to lose more of those games than you’re going to win in the NHL when you’re giving up four goals per game obviously a lot of top goalies allow that occasionally but can’t be your Norm it can’t be your average uh sabes obviously had a bad

Start to the season Levi struggled uh comry struggled Lucan in the battled injury uh was also um you know hasn’t been the greatest but certainly things are starting I think fair to say been a little bit better more stable in thecas size of late after Levi did a stint in

The miners he certainly has been better since he’s been coming back up but there’s still work to be done with the sabes for sure they certainly have a lot to uh to try to fix and move forward here in the second half of the campaign

But like I said the bigger story no but to me I think this is almost as much a favor for Comer he recently did an interview and you could see the frustration from him uh the fact that he’s a free agent coming up this summer and he’s not even getting a chance to

Play yes his numbers aren’t great but it’s a small sample size of seven games he’s probably thinking if you give me some more games I can make those numbers better I know I can play better I just need a chance and he’s not getting that chance with Levi and UPL getting more

The opportunity ahead of them so ultimately the contract is going to be a deterrent probably for a lot of teams uh Comer’s been around the league enough that there’s enough of a history there but I think if he was making less if he was making 8 900,000 maybe a team would

Pick him up and give him a chance but cuz we know there’s lots out there looking for goalie help and for that kind of contract if it’s 1.1 million or less you know that if you pick them up now and if it’s you give them a couple

Games and it’s not working out you can put them back on waivers and even if he doesn’t get picked up again he could be demoted to your AHL team and come off your cap completely but at 1.8 you’re still going to have about 700,000 or

Close to it tied up on your space and that’s pretty you know much a big deal for a lot of teams so I I doubt Comer is going to get picked up you never know crazier things have happened at the very least he can go down to the miners and

At least hopefully get more of a chance to play so as much as this is um you know this is more of a favor for comry to try to either move on or go to the line or play more which is uh what we need to see and of course like I said

Though the bigger story here is samsonov in Toronto there’s no surprise that the team has been extremely frustrated with his play this year he’s been very hot and cold he’s appeared in 15 games only has five wins and those five wins he does have one shut out but there’s been

A lot of just weird goals bad goals soft goals uh had some good performances in there but he’s been way too irantic and inconsistent uh I’ve seen a lot of leaf games this year uh where he’s been a net and it just hasn’t been good especially

Some of the games where they’ve uh you know against Bad teams especially like they’ve lost a couple of stinkers against teams like Chicago Columbus and he’s certainly guilty for those goals like his most recent game just the other night here against the jackets well we’ve seen how that went um you know

Obviously you know not a good story I mean the Leafs ended up uh dropping last night’s game of course as well but Martin Jones was in the net and actually you know played a strong performance Jones has been the better of the two between him and sansen I’m not

Sure exactly how close Joseph wall is I think he’s still a little ways away the belief was with the Leafs that they were going to be um trying to hold on I know Elliot Freeman talked about this in 32 not I guess they don’t call it 32 thoughts they call it Saturday headlines

Now on hockey n Canada last night and he said that they’re the Leafs are expected to hold on try to wait for wall to come back and rather than make a trade the more likely scenario might be that they bring up hild to be from the minor so

That’s you know who really is not probably in his best interest developmentally to come up to the NHL rate now but that’s where things are at with samsonov that he needs to go to the miners to try to find his game um like his structure is just off he find him

Just in positioning off just overall just a a lot of just breakdowns in this game which he was a high draft pick in 2015 by the capitals waited a while to come to North America and now you’re looking at what you know when the Washington Capitals let him go it was

Kind of a heads scratcher him like well you know what as much as like last year looked like a foolish move when Washington spur because he was a lot better for the Leafs but he he’s always that’s has been his problem his entire career is consistency and the compal had

Enough of the inconsistency that they were willing to let him walk for a younger goal tender still in his mid 20s that was telling I mean like I said he did put together a good year last year got a one-year deal 3.55 million again because of that contract it’s probably

Unlikely another team picks him up um the more likely scenarios that he clears the Le will have the option to put him to the Marley’s bring up a goalie there not really probably what they thought they would be doing this year but they got to give somebody a chance who can

Give them some saves and get them some wins ultimately this team’s probably not in any danger missing the Playoffs but they also don’t want to go into the playoffs as a wild card team when they can certainly be a top three team and get try to get home night Advantage um

Certainly you know a bit of a downward Trend in the team here as of late like I said a lot of the games they’ve lost are against the weaker opponents of the NHL I I realize you get a lot of parody and technically in any night any team can

Beat any other team but the leaf should be taking care of business you know against these weaker teams they have a bad trend of having their worst games against the worst teams and when they have the stronger opponents they seem to play better and they get more worked out

I don’t know what it is if it’s a motivational thing I don’t know how to explain that um and we saw Sheldon Keef you know healthy scratch David Camp last night made an example out of him which I know a lot of fans are confused about

Kind of saying that you know kind of taking trying to take some of the owners off the goalies and say that the team has to play better defensively and obviously that’s Camp’s main role as a defensive Center but I I know I kind of agree with a lot of the main sentiment

That I think you kind of singled out the wrong guy but yeah we’ll see what happens there but obviously the Sam son of news comes as a I think a little bit of a surprise here on New Year’s Eve but like Eric comry Samson off’s rocking a goals against average right around four

Per game you can’t have an average that high you’re not going to win many of those games save percentage of 862 like you know you’re way off league minimum like one of the he’s I believe with the number of appearances he has was either the worst or second worst in

The in the league with the advanced analytics and his save percentage like it’s not pretty at all so we’ll see what happens here with the Leafs uh obviously like said I’ll be shocked if he’s picked up but crazier things have happened obviously big news news in Toronto here

On New Year’s Eve I will be back later we have lots of World Junior action to recap we have a big news in Ottawa with another front office hiring and of course lots of other uh action from around the NHL we said the goalie marker will be heating up here after the roster

Freeze and after Christmas and it’s starting to happen here with the waiver wire lots of teams are looking for goalie help are these the guys that get picked up or will they end up clearing let me know your thoughts on that and more down on the comments we’ll discuss

  1. Yeah and Kampf wasn't too thrilled about being scratched too. It broke a 323 consecutive game streak he had going. Generally speaking NHL managers are a little reticent about pulling that kind of thing, so, although warranted, still a little surprising. Just ask Kessel why nobody will give him a contract.

  2. samsonov has real potential to be a number 1 starter but he clearly needs to be around more Russians. its a shame the leafs didnt realize that. oh well… on to the next!!!

  3. Scratching Kampf will drive a wedge in the Leafs dressing room, 16 players that are lower on the food chain can be held accountable, and then 4 player who no matter how uninterested in playing for the logo on the front of the jersey instead of the name on the back. think it is time to " Scratch Keefe".

  4. Does Treliving take a flyer on Comerie ?
Seems there is a consenous starting regarding Keefe .
If thought he took flak when he said something about Marner , his benching a 4th line center because of a flop pass that Columbus scored the tying goal, but nothing not even whisper about 5 players changing at the same time leaving Samsonov to fend for himself! The turn overs by Marner ! Nylanders penalty which started Columbus come back and momentun change!
Top 6 players and two of the highest paid defenseman can make all the mistakes, turnovers, leave the front of net wide open while behind the net ! And not worry about any accountability or held responsible!!
But if you are on the bottom 6 forwards and bottom 4 defenseman make around or above league minimum you seat in the press box may be waiting for you !
BS move by a coach who talks alot watching the BS go on!

  5. As much as Samsonov has been bad, so has the Leafs D. This team gives up way too many pucks and odd-man rushes. I've never seen a team fall for no apparent reason as much as the Leafs.

  6. Samsonov for Allen? One for one? I’d do it! Samsonov is still young at 26 and they both make the same money! GHG!

  7. It was a good decision for Sammy. They also need to fire Keefe. They a defensive style coach with fresh ideas and a new voice because clearly Keefe isn't getting the job done.

  8. The Leafs are an orgaization where the forwards and defence play poor team defence. The coach is inept at getting the team to play defensively and he attempts to send a message by benching a player that may not send a message to the players who should have been benched. A poor decision to waive Samsonov!

  9. If any Leaf fan thinks goaltending is the problem in Toronto shake your head. BRAD MARCHAND OWNS THE ENTIRE TEAM. Takes out a Leaf player, skates by the Leaf bench and challenges them all. 🦗 🦗 🦗. Comes back the next game and NO RESPONSE… so he just scores in O.T. to rub it in. These multimillionaires just trip over their injured players to get back to the bench… THIS TEAM WILL NEVER WIN THE CUP

  10. Campbell, Raanta, Samsonov, Comrie. Relatively big names on the waivers this season.
Sabres should grab Samsonov and send Levi to Rochester.
