Still too high for a professional athlete anywhere.

woah hold the phone… it’s 2008 again?????

I’m just glad we have talented players to pay
DiogenesBarrelisCozy
Leafs need a goalie, otherwise this is all for nothing.
And by goalie I mean all-star HOF potential.

Sorry about you poor franchises out there with nobody to pay. đ

Not sure what the point is here. Every sports league in the US has had their cap go up, and as such, player contracts have gone up.
Wait until you find out about European football, where Real Madrid paid about $110,000,000 to buy a 20yr old Jude Bellingham from BVB, and then pays him an annual salary of about $20,000,000 a year.
Background-Half-2862
Oh so back when a 6 million dollar contract was outrageous and league min was 475k you mean?
DarkAgeMonks
Good for them. The window for making money as an athlete is so small.

A picture is worth a thousand words….but right now I have no words….8 more years with floater extraordinaire…u watch this year is a contract yr…u will see Willie not score anymore and disappear in the playoffs. Well another decade of not winning the cup….but good thing is that all prices for water, beer and food have just automatically doubled at the arena….happy cake day leaf fans
This core 4 will never ever win…good luck trying to sign other players….only hope is they don’t sign Mitch and Johnny…then we might have money to sign a few more d men and another goalie….Leafs management..like wtf

So?
Additional_Noise_184
The amount isnât the problem. Itâs that those four guys take about 50% of the teams cap. Hard to build out the rest of the lineup with that.
Itâs why defence and goaltending have been the leafs weak points for a few years now.
zanny2019
Daym. All that money to spend on players and still cant make it to even conferences finals đ¤Łđ¤Ł
matthewsisaleaf50
NHL had a salary cap during the great depression of $62,500. Which is about as relevant as the 2007-2008 salary cap.

And now enjoy to continue not winning a cup. You’d think they would try to fix their goaltending/defense
redditmodsdownvote
you should see it. compared to the salaries of bobby orr and his stanley cup champion bruins from the 70’s and just matthews alone makes more! crazy isn’t it? and don’t try to see me your inflation bullshit either!!

Next year is a guaranteed write off. Once the Tavares contract is up, maybe they can up their depth a bit. I love this team, but this is NOT a winning formula
Cottagewknds
Gotta love everyone ripping the decision to sign him. Pocket GMâs who think they know the financial situation more than the people experienced to do the job.
If they end up winning the cup or even making it past the second round this year people will turn coat and say it was a good deal lock him up.
The salary cap is going up next year and offense is a lock. They need a few grinder D men to compliment Reilly (nobody fancy – think Vancouver who only has Hughes) and a reliable goalie that doesnât get injured and they are a contender.
Weâre all acting like they wonât be competitive because of this which is a joke lol. Hate the team if you want but letâs not kid ourselves. Itâs a problem youâd love to have on all your teams. Youâre just mad you donât have them.

Actually, it’s more than three and a half million dollars less than the 2008 salary cap, and it won’t actually take effect until 2024-25.

Love seeing players get paid. Millionaires over the billones (owners) baby
ViolinistMean199
Calling it the core 4 feels so disrespectful to Reilly. He was big in their round 1 win last year
IAmTheBredman
Cool. The players skate as fast as the cars could drive in 1912. Any other irrelevant details??
Interesting-Race-919
The math doesn’t add up. Nylander’s cap hit is $6.9 million for 23-24. So this is wrong.
Jer4Strings
At least the Leafs have all those Cups to show for itâŚ
OctoWings13
It’s a solid core and top end, including Reilly as well, but damn it’s a team sport and they left like 50 bucks and a medium pizza to fill out the entire rest of it
Judge_Rhinohold
And Jagr made $17.4M 25 years ago.
No_Tea_9845
Ohtani also almost makes as much in a season as the entire current NHL cap
