What’s Wrong with the New York Islanders Second Line?

The New York Islanders second line of Brock Nelson, Pierre Engvall and Kyle Palmieri has gone cold. We discuss their struggles and what the team can do about it on today’s show.

Plus, we have the latest injury updates on Adam Pelech and a signing by the Bridgeport Islanders to help that struggling team add some depth. And the Isles tweak their defensive system in practice to prevent more issues like what we saw against Las Vegas.

We also preview tonight’s home game against the Vancouver Canucks.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. What's wrong with second line? It isn't a legit second line. I said earlier in season that line couldn't sustain that hot pace. 21 has become an inconsistant liability probably headed to ir any day now. 18 just sucks and should be nowhere near second line. The isles forwards are so lacking this line just charades as a second line out of default. That's why loser needs to get off his ass and get a proven scorer for 13/14 line-to give forwards a boost and let second line be a mess. Or get two fwds. and put 13 on one line, 14 on another for better balance. Brock is now being dragged down playing with those two lugs. 21 with one year left should be moved. Putting 27 there aint the answer either. Only possiblility outside of trade-maybe give ishkatov a call and see what he can do. Wont happen. Go get lindholm a solid top sixer good face-off man to put on second line and put useless 18 who cost isles a third this draft where he belongs. Bottom lines/pk duty. 10/27 seem destined to play with 13/14 until trade. Toss 26 into any deal as a throw in. Too bad isles can't get in 7-10 range in draft and take exciting d man pareyk with first (which will be traded anyway) to put juice in attack. Compared to makar, letang. Dude can skate/shoot-join the rush.

  2. Palmieri is the problem. He has been extremely ineffective since he got here. When hes not injured, hes not scoring, and when hes not scoring, hes useless.

Everyone says that hes a gamer in the playoffs. Ok. Great.

He should help us in the regular season too, because if he doesn't what good is he in the playoffs when we dont even make them?

He needs to be benched for a game or 2 and hopefully that wakes him up. If not, trade him.

  3. Rick Tocchet will out coach Lane Lambert, when I speak about a new coach it’s long term, aside a fill in till the end of the season is an improvement, and start getting our young kids out there, they certainly deserve a shot the way this team is playing, great show thank you Gil

  4. Good morning Gil, hopefully you will get the 2 nd line going 🎉i didn’t know it was that bad. I guess that’s why we be losing a little. It is what it is 🎉enjoy the game tonight!! Let’s go islanders 🎉

  5. One goal in 13 games? Wow, I didn’t realize that. Twenty games without an assist, not even a secondary? Yeah, the 2nd line is an Achilles heel. They have to do something about it, we’re getting into the dog days of the season and they need to be better.

  6. Good morning team. Gil, excellent episode. Thank you for bringing up this point about the 2nd line. With the exception of Brock Nelson, they haven't been performing, as a unit should. Even the best players can't carry a "line" on their own. It seemed Engvall had a game or two of good play after being benched. Maybe consider benching Palms and Engvall together. Try Wahlstrom and Fausching on the 2nd line. Something has to be done to shake it up. Third time playing Vancouver since the trade. If I'm not mistaken, the last two times were win by Vancouver. Of course they are one of the top teams, so we have a chance to beat them tonight since we seem to play at the level of our opponents. We'll see. Everyone have a great day. Talk to you all tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  7. Hi Gil. There just isn't enough talent on this team to spread across two let alone 4 lines. Add into the equation the age of the team. From the GM down through the coach and players, this team is positioned to hover around 6-8th in the division best case. Unless a significant players are traded and/or released, this team isn't getting significantly better anytime soon. When you look at the elite teams, there are at least 3 players on the team that are generational talent. This club has 2 very good players under 30 in Horvat and Barzal. Everyone talks about Dobson but I think he's great trade material because under Lane Lambert he's been allowed to develop a number of bad habits.

  8. Hey Gil – I liked that you called out this line because there needs to be accountability on this team and the problem here is Engvall. That contract that was given to him was a HUGE MISTAKE because even though he has some speed he can't handle the puck moving north to south and is only good for skating the puck into the zone east to west and he should not be relied upon to push the line but he's being paid as such. Then we get to Nelson and Palms who are not great skaters but they both can score goals when they want to and I think this line along with the Pageau line need to be shaken up to make something productive and that starts with the coaches doing that and I don't think Lambert will do anything. Things have got to change maybe bring up some energy from Bridgeport.

  9. Well coach said they played well. That 3rd period sequence was weird. Hit a post, then give up two goals quickly. Game over. Catch Vancouver on their own brutal road trip. Watched them dump the Rangers as they outskated them. Martin starts tonight… beat them up to slow them down IMO.

  10. Great show Gil as usual … I always say imagine barzal and horvat with a real left winger … then it hit me ; IMAGINE Brock with 2 real wingers lol … I used to like palms and Engvall but come on allready. DO SOMETHING….

  11. Update, down 2 zip. Looking good as usual. Lane has his boys ready to play against their back up goalie and a somewhat gassed out team from lasnight… Lane is awesome!!! 2nd and 4th lines are pathetic
