Thomas Harley Stepped Up for the Dallas Stars Without Miro | Is Jake Oettinger Nearing a Return??

The Dallas Stars young defensemen Thomas Harley has been a huge relief for the backend this season. With Miro Heiskanen going down a few games ago, the defense is in a venerable state. However, Harley is playing some of his best hockey of the season and Joey tells you why on today’s episode of Locked On Stars. Pete DeBoer is utilizing at 5 on 5 since the absence of Miro, he leads the team with just under 59 minutes of time on ice at even strength. Plus the Stars have a 75.3 % xG share when he’s on the ice, highest on the team. He has made such an impact and with Miro out, it allows him to establish himself as the player that deserves just as much as time as Heiskanen is getting. Next, the Stars have the tough task of trying to beat a team again after doing so a few nights before. The Minnesota Wild are in Dallas tonight looking for revenge. The Wild could start their AHL call up and first round pick Jesper Wallstedt who has been awaiting his first career NHL start. With the Wild down a lot of bodies they may look for a spark like the Stars did with Matt Murray who of course shutout the Wild on Monday night. To finish the show, Joey discusses the possibility of Jake Oettinger returning, with Matt Murray being loaned to the AHL yesterday, that could mean Otter is back or they are trying to save cap space once again. Either way, all signs are pointing that Oettinger is close and could be back as early as the weekend which will be a delight to Stars fans everywhere.

  1. In terms of the flames and their potential fire sale, do you think a guy like Rasmus Andersson or Weegar would be available as longer term guys rather than Tanev, or does our cap situation not allow that?

  2. They recalled Murray for tonight and may stay through the weekend for the back to back games so not to rush Otter back according to this afternoon presser from Pete

  3. As far as the posting on Utube I was liking it at the earlier time. Anyone can find it later from an earlier posting. I usually have my coffee listening to your take on things.

  4. It has been stated before but the biggest chips on the Stars table has to be Stankoven and Bourque. The risk is trading away the potential future for the now. Sure we are flush with forwards now but it is still an aging crew. How many more productive seasons can we expect from Pavelski and Benn? We are the second oldest team in the league (average age of starters) so having that fresh blood is very attractive looking to the next two seasons.

But the question about this team going deep into the playoffs with the current defensive squad is the problem for today. If we have to trade away the young forwards I think we have to get a young defensive asset that has 3+ productive years playing fast and hard.

Harley looked NHL ready when he played late last season and glad he is getting his shine. Nils getting ice-time is great too. Love him or hate him one way or the other the Stars have to figure out what they are going to do with him . I like his speed and aggression but he is undersized. I think a pairing of him with one of the larger slower defensive players is a nice balance.

Going to be interesting to see what moves (if any) the front office makes. Push all the chips into the center of the table for this season or be conservative and look to the next couple seasons.
