Keefe calls out Nylander | NHL Morning Recap | 7-Eleven That’s Hockey

7-Eleven That’s Hockey host Gino Reda recaps a busy Saturday in the NHL, including the Oilers and Kraken establishing franchise records, a milestone for Nikita Kucherov, and just days after signing the biggest deal in franchise history, William Nylander gets called out by his head coach.

  1. Keefe has had 4 years and numerous lineup changes. When do they figure out this guy is not an NHL coach. Max Domi has been on the PP and in the shootout. He pulled the goalie with over 3 minutes left and 1 goal down. He is constantly juggling lines mid-game. He blames goalies when that idiot made sure that Freddie Anderson was shuffled out in favor of Jack Campbell. He started McCabe over Reilly in the Islanders overtime. Special teams are a joke. Jesus I could go on forever. What the hell does Keefe bring to the team, nothing. Treliving has been a disaster, lets Schenn and O'Reilly get away in favor of Klingberg and Bertuzzi. Clean out the coaching and management (such as it is) from Keefe to Shanahan, it's not working. Blaming Willy is pretty hilarious after 2 whole games, after Nylander has put up two extended scoring streaks and is having his best year to date (which happens every year with the guy, he increases every year). Tired of these stupid sports writers, go get excited about the Oilers beating non-playoff teams.

  2. Marner's reaction after Matthews being crosschecked tells you all you need to know about this team.
They're going to get KILLED in the playoffs.

  3. Every time they win, its the Stanley Cup parade. Every time they lose, its time to make trades. Thats been the Leafs for decades

  4. Keefe didn't rip on Nylander, he ripped on his line. Why do you think Keefe only played Nylander with Matthews and Marner? It was a statement to his regular line mates…

  5. Weird how he goes after Nylander, but has said nothing about Marner's bonehead plays this season.

It will also only be a matter of time before he walks back his comments, like usual.

  6. So Keefe says Nylander didn't have a good shift all game, and his solution was to play him more?

  7. Gotta find someone to take the blame this team is going nowhere tell me why you need another 8+ million dollar forward when you really need goaltending and defense?????? 😂

  8. YES! Why tf didn't anyone respond to that ugly cross check? That literally could have ended the teama chances at making the playoffs. And I don't care that the game was close and being careful about penalties blah blah blah. If that's the message that you want to send to the rest of the NHL, that they can injure our stars without repercussion in a close game, well… it's open hunting season and the leafs are falling from their branches byy's, they're gonna get trampled!

  9. Leafs coach is to blame for the loss as much as anyone. And yes, nobody stood up for the cross check. But this we’ve come to except from the Leafs.

  10. I think Nylander has more than earned some latitude as he is having a great season.

  11. Maybe I don't watch enough games but it seems when a top player or any player on a team that gets a cheap shot, even a border line shot, even when it's called, is at least going to get a glove in the face, and likely if it was a real cheap shot the guy who did it is going to be called out. That incident real shows the poor judgement in picking up Ryan Reeves, for what? So think about it what is to be worried about, who is on the ice to do anything about it? Billy Bystander, I don't think so, Michell Passenger, not likely. Leaf's should be advised body checking is allowed.

  12. Sheldon is under the gun this year and is fighting to keep his job. The big thing is big deal Nylander signed the biggest contract in franchise history … who cares! Dont blame one player this whole team are responsible for the sloppy plays. Sure they have lots of great offensive players but the problem is the team is no real tough guy or guys to set the tone of the game. Meaning protect your great players and who are willing to sorry fight if neccessary. A great team needs that guy like Domi back in the day to let other teams know we mean business! Sadly this Leafs team lacks the toughness to go all the way!

  13. Nylander …8 year no trade…totally stupid…should of traded him and spent the money on defence that you will need for the play-offs,,,,as for Nylander, his ice just got smaller…2 feet away from the boards and no roaming past the blue line in your own end….this management sees a different game…they see the business side of the franchise…fuck the fans…

  14. I’d be telling Marner I need to see 10ib of new muscle on him by the end of summer or I would strongly consider moving him. He’s currently not built for the playoffs and if your no good for the playoffs, what’s to point of having him on the team? Am I right or am I right?

  15. I don’t think nylander was the one being ripped by the head coach. Matter of fact, he was moved up with the Mathews Marner line. The ripping was for the slow, underperforming captain and his bottom four side kick Bert

  16. What kind of coach decides to shuffle his lines, messing with the line chemistry half way through the 3 period when you’re still up by a goal?
    A shitty coach that’s who!
If Keefe didn’t like the play to Tavares, he should have just made him a healthy scratch for the next game.

  17. Why call out Nylander? He does what he does or has done in the past. He’s done the same thing since he came into the league, and that’s take games off, including skating passed hits and puck battles. I’ve said before his contract ain’t gonna age well.

  18. Haven't had two great game's lol
He rips Nylander, but why did he play him then?
Oh, because he excuses Nylander offensive talent BS
Great point, Gino's what happened to standing up for everyone!
Didn't go after Marner for freezing on the 1st goal.
Go after Brodies play this year ! McCabes give aways !
Keefe doesn't call a time out this game or Thursdays game after squandering two goal leads ! No ripping from the media !!

  19. He ripped the whole line. Tavares and Bertuzzi were ass too. If Willy was so horrendous theirs no way he gets first pk shifts. I think it was more so that Tavares and Bertuzzi couldn’t keep up with the game

  20. Hahahahaha….what a team….the best player on the team and the coach keeps ragging on him…..Matthews is on the ice for more goals scored on his team but you never hear a peep…..no wonder their not contenders…..

  21. No objective person could have watched that game and thought Nylander played worse than little Mitchie Marner. The local yokels just can't bring themselves to say anything against little Mitchie. So Nylander becomes the whipping boy. It's been happening for years now. If you say anything about Marner his fan bois lose their ** and Mitchie himself sulks. Mr. Selke? More like Mr. Sulky.

  22. You don’t need tough players to have team toughness, that’s a real problem for the Leafs. Also, remember last year when Keefe benched Marner for a shift? He had a tantrum. Jon Cooper (one of the best) benched his top line for an entire period. Keefe struggles with accountability/discipline when it comes to his top players

  23. Each line has a Leader and when your leader is out to lunch…that line should be call out…
    Keefe is right….
I do not think this players understand each line has a leader role. They are giving a task and challenging one too. To produce…
    Many off them haven't…

  24. McCabe stepped up after Matthews got crosschecked. Wasn't on the same shift but he went after Rantanen next shift. He got a cross checking penalty for it but he did try to send a message. Then he leveled another Av when he got out of the box. Too many snowflakes who think it's only the grinders job to show team toughness. Do you think Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark or Lanny McDonald's job was to provide toughness? They scored a ton of points too, but, more importantly they had their teammates backs 24/7. The 1st guy that should have sent a message after Manson's crosscheck was Matthews himself. Get a little Gordie Howe in your game and you will be left alone. Just my opinion.

  25. Sheldon is losing it. Timing of his comments have been off a lot lately. Hes lost touch with this team. He also mentioned how the McKinnon line was on another level. Not even the NHL level.. Way to set your boys up for failure moron. He is starting to really shift accountability in subtle ways. It's time for him to go. The goal is not to have the best team. But to have your team play it's best, he has never accomplished that with this group

  26. I think that Sheldon has lost the room. The Leafs require a coaching change and it must happen now or this year will be the same as the last 57.
