Watch at 0.25x speed. You can see Gourde get high sticked by his own teammate at the same time McDavid cross checks. Gourde is even closing his left eye and wincing. He got all fired up over his own teammates errant stick.
This just shows how strong the oilers star players get when you mess with there teammates Bouchard rag-dolling a kraken and mcdavid is the first person to stand up for his teammate and battle for him wow. And drai when he head locked zegras a while ago
I don't recall a time when the person who was charged was assessed the only roughing minor after getting hit defending himself…either they both get roughing minors or nobody. It's not like Ekholm was instigator on a hit on a teammate. Refs these days should get a base salary and then a bonus at the end of the season and ever ridiculously bad call takes money out of their bonus.

Gourde just earned himself a few more games in the NHL, since he can do that to Mcdavid, definitely got the Oilers off their game. Not many would go after Mcdavid and Ekholm like that.

that McD & Ek swooped in with speed
and made the Dirty Gourde bleed.
Ekholm was lucky to barely escaped a concussion.
Gourde should definitely get some serious punishment for that. He's a trouble-maker and usually aims to rile the other team up, but this was way beyond even his standards. And i say that as a Kraken fan.
Ekholm was actually ready for the hit. What he wasnt ready for was Gourde only targetting his head.

I keep saying this players have to protect themselves at all times dont think for a second ooooo he wont hit me or run me because players do hit hard. Ekholm has to be more ready for a hit not just play it as anything else. So again 5 minute major and Ekholm for not protecting himself will skate away. And the game gets more and more watered down where players responsability for protecting themseves will no longer exist flying down the ice with your head down or turning into the boards to get it will be gone.
