It’s just about time to hire a coach who doesn’t constantly shit on the kid and destroy his confidence. You know, actually ***COACH***.

I can’t believe that there would be the suggestion of moving Lilly. Remember when we traded Gunnarsson and then we tried to acquire that exact same player for the last 8 years?

  3. ElephantShell34

He’s playing roughly 2nd pair minutes right now isn’t he? And I don’t think he’s been scratched all season (only time missed I believe was due to his injury). Kinda seems like an unnecessary thing to ponder right now considering Lily’s spot in the lineup feels pretty secure.

  4. Liljegren is prone to some baffling turnovers at times but in general he’s consistently one of our better defensemen. I honestly don’t understand why this article is even a thing. Keefe playing a disastrous Giordano-McCabe pairing while Liljegren sat scratched is a coaching problem.

  5. am i the only one that thinks this is a crazy article. Why would you want to move on from Lilly when he is a RFA, and to me, is clearly in the top 4 right now. Also have to remember, the only Dman signed next year is Rielley, Mcabe and Timmins…

The leafs are out of options. Why would they move one of their younger defenders who actually has a bit of upside. The defence is mediocre at best they need to add not subtract. Get better defenders to fill the #2,3 & 4 spots and move Liligren, Mcabe and Benoit down to more manageable minutes.

This is basically Lilli’s first season as the full time Top 4 D at the NHL level, these kinds of mistakes are normal, possibly even expected.

Not every Top 4 D prospect explodes onto the scene like Makar or Mo. Some take a long long time to get going like Hedman. Remember at some point Tampa fans and even the FO were fully willing to move Hedman because he wasn’t reaching that First option D they envisioned when he was drafted. Then the rest is history after everything clicked for him.

I’m not saying Lilli is like Hedman, but he’s also 23 and going to be a RFA after this contract expires. Worst case scenario here we have a 3-4D guy that we can probably lock in long term under the market rate due to age, current stats, and these “rookie” mistakes he occasionally makes

  8. If we had six other quality D men pushing for Lilly’s spot this article might have merit, but with the way this team is constructed he might already be our second best defencemen all around, on a cost controlled contract.

This is clickbait drivel. Removing Lilly makes this team instantly worse and leaves us trying to replace him for the next number of years. Garbage journalism.

Why have this much patience developing this player only to trade him now?

Their back end is fuckin trash right now too, give him a spot in the first two pairs, it’s time to graduate not trade him

  10. HugeSquirrel

Lmao Lilly is on a good contract, RFA, young, and a right shot. Outside of Rielly, he’s the last guy we should move on from.

  11. LawrenceMoten21

He’s a guy playing on the second pair who would be an elite third pair guy.

The problem isn’t Lilly, it’s the roster construction.

I don’t think it’s too outlandish to suggest that Liljegren might be our second best defenceman, third best at worst, right now. It’s not Brodie, it’s not Gio, and while McCabe brings something we don’t have enough of I don’t think he stands out enough to be the undisputed second best defender on the team. I don’t think trading Liljegren is a luxury we have right now, we need more D and getting rid of one of our better ones seems counterintuitive.

  13. Sideshift1427

Let’s solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Who writes this crap?

  14. dynozombie

How about fire Keefe and utilize the player properly. Not just lily but with bertuzzi and others as well

  15. DrinkMoreBrews

24-year old defenseman making $1.4 million a year on a team who’s struggled to keep defensemen healthy all season. Not sure the hurry to move on from Lily.

  16. Although Liljegren makes the occasional dumb play like in the 3rd period last game, for the most part, he is decent in the defensive zone. I believe McCabe and Brodie make more mistakes in the defensive zone than Lily. His breakout passes are 2nd best to only Rielly . I think the biggest problems that have ocurred with Liljegren have been due to Keefe. His coach cuts everyone else slack, but hangs Liljegren all the time. Justin Holl is a prime example of what Keefe was willing to let go, considering the amount of mistakes he made. So I say keep him.

Watching that Calgary game I was thinking about how nice it would be to have one of Andersson or Weegar. I can’t speak for Weegar but Liljegren and Andersson are very comparable in terms of size, development, and play driving. I think it’d be a huge mistake moving Liljegren, if the issue is deployment I’d seriously consider moving on from Keefe. I don’t think there’s been a single impact player that has been developed under him. Guys like Liljegren, Robertson, and Sandin last year need consistent play time to develop. Tampa won their cups on young players out performing their contracts, think Colton, Sergachev, Cernak, Cirelli (they’ve all been paid handsomely since then).

  18. carletondabare

Yeah bro let’s trade Liljegren, trade Robertson, trade Holmberg. God forbid Knies’s slump goes on any longer, or we’ll have to talk about trading him too

  19. TheGameWaker

He’s a young defenceman – which we have very few of – on a good track that we could get anything for in a trade! Maybe even a first round pick that we can use on another ~~defenceman~~ forward!

  20. SpinningDickTwist

Don’t you fucking dare give up on him before he enters his prime. Defensive primes, for normal above average D not mega stars, begin for a guy like Lilly in 1.5-2 years from now.

I will lose my fucking mind if we give up on him too soon.

  21. NotMikeBabcock

This team, media and the fanbase are so broken when it comes to Liljegren. It’s a travesty that they allowed Sandin to play over him, Lili is 2x the defender Sandin is, has been here for like 2 years longer and still only has 10 games more… We’ve needed to let him cook in the regular season to get him ready for the playoff hockey they NEED him to play. Last year was the only time they’ve given him a real look, they chose him and then just dropped him into a playoff series against the defending runner up and 2x champs and just expected him to do his thing with maybe a 100 games of sporadicly placed play. He’s the future of this blue line and the disrespect is unwarrented.
