“He Watches A Lot Of Hockey” | Buffalo Sabres Ryan Johnson On Playing Against His Dad In Anaheim
Did you have this one and even the one next month in Buffalo kind of circled there’s a chance you might actually be up here with your father on the other bench yeah um honestly we we kind of looked at it like pretty early on and
Then it was still so far off I didn’t know what to expect um but yeah saw it coming in the future so I was telling people you know that I’ll hopefully be down there hopefully be in California and yeah now I’m here so thank thank God what are the emotions like today now
That it’s here um feels good just a lot of fun being uh in the state um you know going home and seeing a lot of familiar sites usually we’re exploring a new city but um yeah being in the hometown skiting ski at this rink a few times when I was younger
Too so I feel like it’s really cool watch a lot of games here as well um so that kind of feels uh yeah really cool just just being in a spot that I grew up watching getting a chance in the NHL for the first time this year I know your
Father’s busy with his own team but like what are some of the things you and him have talked about since you got called up does he talk about some of your shifts does he watch how often does he watch yeah he watches quite a few of the
Games even though he’s got his his own team to watch um so he watches a lot of hockey but um yeah he’s giving me just advice and uh just feedback too and um yeah he hasn’t seen the game live obviously so it’s a little different
Perspective I think on TV uh yeah so I’m excited to that he’s able to be here and you know coach Ing and watching as well so so the last time he would have seen you play Live would have been when did he go to the Frozen Four did he yeah
He’s at the first game in the Frozen Four the semis so semis yeah what’s it mean not only back here but you know you were a junior duck and you know they talk a lot about developing hockey in California just how significant is that in your mind that you were once a junior
Duck and here you are playing the ducks in Anaheim yeah I think that’s that’s really cool I know a lot of uh teammates who are here are going to be here tonight um obviously a lot of Junior Duck players too I think it’s it’s definitely something you grow up
Watching and and you dream of as a junior duck I think that’s that’s why they call the junior Ducks is kind of like you know giving those kids a little inspiration and uh yeah so I think it’s really cool just to be in this in this
Setting and you know to be playing not for the the Ducks but for the Sabers so um yeah it’s obviously the youth program had a lot of uh former NHL players too which is cool like my dad and N Myer and my Sean so just getting that experience and
You know seeing their kids um playing that program too is really special and lot of them you know settle down in California after so how many people are coming for you tonight friends and family yeah uh friends and family I would say around 50 not not not to so uh
Yeah quite a few did you get to see uh your parents last night or did you get to talk to your dad last night mhm yeah yeah so I saw them last night um was able to eat a dinner with them and spent some time with them as well so that was
That was really special just to see them again umly I told you my dad hasn’t came to a game yet and I haven’t seen him in person in a while too so mom’s flew out to a couple though so so mom’s root for you right uh I think so yeah
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Ryan Johnson spoke with the media after morning skate on January 23, 2024. He talked about playing against the Anaheim Ducks, for who his dad is an assistant coach.
