I didn’t think he’d comeback like this

Ilya Samsonov recorded 32 saves for his second shutout of the year as the Toronto Maple Leafs took on the Winnipeg Jets Wednesday night. That and more in today’s NHL Hockey video!

  1. Its totally unsustainable and the Leafs have fixed none of their issues. Their feast or famine goalie continues to be streaky which will only end in more misery for Leaf fans.

  2. That wasn't a 2 on 0. It was a 2 on SAMMY!!!!! So glad he's had a few good starts in a row. Every Leafs fan I've heard from loves Sammy but also knew he was struggling. You're only as good as your last game but so far his performances have been promising.

  3. It’s gonna be crazy when Winnipeg is relocated before Arizona. Salt Lake City, Green Bay and Hartford are all deserving….especially when Winnipeg can’t sell out their 15,000 seat arena.

  4. it's one game but it's toronto so i guess the cup parade is back on lol leafs and their fans are hockeys version of the dallas cowboys

  5. embarrassing effort in front of Sammy for nearly two full periods, and he winds up proving to the world whatever was impinging on his mental state then, is being held at bay now in tremendous fashion. My favor of Keefe has been on the downward slide lately, and i think getting outshot 20-6 at nearly the halfway point in a game doesn't help, but giving shit to the top guys & benching them leading to Nic Robertson showing out in OT was good

Also just wanna point out (thanks to Steve Dangle) that Bertuzzi's got six goals in 707 minutes TOI, Knies has eight in 627 TOI, Domi has four in 592 TOI, and my man Nic Robertson has seven in 307 TOI. I'm not saying his game is perfect, and that he needs 22:00 a game…… but them numbers speak volumes, in my opinion

  6. Not to excuse Marner and Matthews for that brutal change, but Nylander was tripped on that play and most likely would have got that puck first before the Jets player.

  7. Sammy's reaction to the crowd chanting his name makes me think of Trea Turner with the Phillies in MLB where the fans decided to support a struggling star instead of booing him and it turned the player's (and the team's) season around

Granted Samsonov battled back on his own before the fans got behind him, but hopefully this sort of thing will give him the boost to stay there

  8. The post game was the best. Sammy got the belt last game, and tried to give it to Matthews, who said "nope, this one is all you. You kept us in it when we shouldn't have been."

  9. I hope he is back but what will be interesting is how he bounces back from one bad game when it happens.

  10. What caught my eye was how calm Sammy looked. Yeah the play was fumbled but usually you see goaltenders trying to prepare themselves to go to one side or the other. Sammy didn't. It was just a waiting game until he got the first save. He then gets back up and prepares for the next save. I want to say that that he's back but only time will tell.

  11. I think the biggest reason for Sammy being so solid in this game mainly due to the game before. The low-event, low shot game in Seattle set the stage for the Winnipeg and getting your groove back. As a goalie who tends to run hot and cold like Sammy I find those 'easier' games like Toronto had in Seattle can really help settle you down – You don't need feel like you need to win it for your team with 100 saves or watch your team throwing a 100 shots on the goalie at the other end only to have a odd-man rush coming at you and you're quickly down and take the wind of your teams sails. Seattle was the perfect game for Sammy to re-set. Winnipeg was a HUGE game for him… but the next 1 will be important too… to see if he can build some momentum and round into form.

  12. The leafs forwards have been so frustrating. The goal scorers don’t seem to care enough about the team to step up and defend when they need to.

  13. I'm not a Leafs fan, but Samsonov was 10 ft tall during that game, and the Leafs are lucky he was… because everyone else (bar Robertson) was awful. I was out of my chair, cheering, on the 2-on-goalie triple save.

  14. I really hope he keeps it up. Last season he was pretty good, but when this season started… he was awful, no way around that.

The Samsonov I have seen in these last couple of starts is the one Leafs fans had started to believe in last year. If he can keep these performances a bit more consistent (and if the team on front of him plays better, because holy shit the Leafs were all over the place), he has a ton of promise.
