He is so good that they literally can’t call all the infractions against him or the other team would be short handed half the game 😄 at least that’s what I’ve always thought. Def not fair but probably their reasoning

NHL officiating is horrible. However, In my opinion, the big thing people misunderstand is that officiating this officiating is intentional, not incompetence of the refs.
The mandate NHL refs operate under is decidedly not to just call the game by the book. The league is desperately believes that “parity” (big finger quotes) is a great thing for the league, even if it is manufactured and totally artificial at times.
Game management/even up calls are a huge part of how this is achieved. The refs see these plays that we all look at and think “how is that not a penalty?”, but they’re thinking “EDM has already had a couple power plays, and I need to find something to call against EDM next so I’m letting this go.”
Officiating makes a lot more sense if you look at it this way, rather than thinking refs just miss or make terrible calls all the time.
It’s insanity, but it is how the league wants to run games/the league. Of course this is an incompetent strategy for actually growing the game and the league, but then again the league is run but incompetent clowns, so sort of makes sense.
